can u recommend a new internet provider

I just quit bell as a tech, so I'll clear some things up.

Bells new 'fibe' service is fiber to the OPI. (brown box on the street) Last mile on copper should not affect you.

So that it doesnt affect you for sure (>1km or so on copper, regardless if it does hurt your speeds or not) bell purposley overprofiles your line. (5mb plan is profiled at just under 7mb.)

3rd party providers are limited to 5mb plans (acanac, tekksavvy, etc)

If you have actual line trouble with a 3rd party, you are screwed.

3rd parties will never be faster than bell. They are on the exact same slams, the same lines, and the same backbone. Plus the 5mb limit.

All of bells new slams are capable of up to 50mb/s.

edit: if you live in a newer condo you are golden, as it will be fiber to the basement where the slams are located. I've profiled customers for 27 and gotten 100% throughput numerous times in this situation.

What about DSL from techsavvy? how does it compare to Cable?

It's cheaper, 1/3 of the speed on the downstream (even less), 70% of the speed on the upstream. It really depends on the neighborhood.. I'm lovin' my cable, but my boss is ****** that his subdivision is Robbers-only and not properly wired up, so he's experiencing some serious packet-loss issues.

True in most cases, but I've seen'em get that one wrong by 100+%. In several cases, it was known that a customer could only sync at 2-2.5/512, but they were put on 5/800 profiles so Bell tickets needed to be opened.

That is correct but speed-matching is on its way, as soon as the UBB mess gets sorted out.

Bell is under obligation to act on the ticket and generally it's a 48hr thing.. It sucks, but the issues do get fixed.

That is correct, but the 5Mb limit won't stay too long. The benefit to the 3rd party services comes from realistic usage caps (200-unlimited) as opposed to being afraid of updating your operating system.

All of bells new slams are capable of up to 50mb/s.

And will offer a monthly cap of 5GB.. 6GB if we're good little boys

I have Netflix, do you think using DSL would be enough?

OK for standard def, a bit iffy for hi-def, as long as you aren't passing too much traffic with other apps/devices.. I'd go with cable if available. If you're in an area where the indies don't have cable service coverage, you'd be better off bonding multiple DSL lines.

Thats where the lines come into play. If you have old two wire drop coming into your house, ake sure its replaced. (cotton drop)

And they do. Send a tech out, make sure the bell owned line is ok. If the problem is within the house they leave and you have to call again. We were encouraged by managers to spend as little time as possible on third party lines, and inside wiring is a no no.

That is true... Actually, I've hear that from a Bell tech that was putting in a couple of dry loops here. I just ran my own ISW (had plenty of CAT6 left) and that allowed me to run some CAT6 between the utility coridor and the electrical panel in case I ever need it  In any case, that's the difference between Bell and Rogers.. Rogers is responsible for getting the line all the way to your device.. However, they will drill into your walls and do some pretty ghetto stuff to get'er done. Bell says "your wiring, your problem." Of course, they will allow for their techies to do a quick tweak or at least tell you where the problem is if you're a Bell customer. If you're with a 3rd party ISP, you have to get your own telephone technician or do it yourself. To avoid DMC's (Diagnostic Maintenance Charges at $87.70 a pop that Bell charges every time you open a ticket and the issue is not on their end), some 3rd party ISP's go as far as guiding their customers to test their connection at NID/demarc, just to eliminate the possibility of bad inside wiring.

regarding the 5K limit for indies....not necessarily true...

my moms with Primus and she hits 750kb/s download speeds with her 5K/800 plan on Primus.

I have DSL, and it would be nice to have Cable, simply because it would be faster and cost the same (i gotta pay for dry loop). But since its not available where i am its not a biggie....seriously, anything i have to download can wait a bit longer...

Most likely a provisioning error. Mistakenly put on 6/800 profile. Happens from time to time and most indies keep that quiet from Ma Bell, unless the customer has crappy line stats. I like my cable service especially when my wife is streaming, I can still VPN to work and get the job done.. Those extra 10Mbps sure come in useful

i bonded two 6Mb lines from TekSavvy, but i used a microtik router instead of the linksys or some of the other ones because this one comes with 512MB in it, thought it would be better at handling the throughput...but considering i just went from a 3Mb to a 12Mb (10Mb realistically), i'm laughing. although i run a failover to rogers cable just in case something happens, my failover is still twice as fast as my old line, all at a fraction of a price...love it...

teksavy +1000000

Never had such great service!

It is entirely true. Your mom is probably just profiled wrong. Dont ever call for problems LOL.

Yeah, under these circumstances, you'd wanna be damn sure the issue is with Bell unless you wanna lose the extra 1Mbps.. In one case, I have seen them increase it from the 6Mbps profile to 7Mbps, but that was because Bell was asked to decrease the speed (too much for the lines to handle, so there was intermittent loss of connectivity).
