Can I do my M test on Scooter

Hi

I have had my Yamaha Smax for near 4 years now. It has a 155cc engine. Bought it new from a dealer and now it has almost 9000km on it. I would say half of my ride has been on Highway.

I would like to know that if it is possible to take my M exam on my scooter?

Thank you.

Are you planning on doing the m exit with a school or with the ministry?

With the Ministry. I thought you can only do M exit with the ministry and M2 either ministry or with a school.

Am I wrong?+

No you can do the m exit with a school as well. However, schools I know want u to come with a motorcycle if u want the full M regardless of displacement. I believe the same is true for the ministry.

Ok thank you for the info. I didnt know that. I guess, I have to sell my scooter and get a real motorcycle.

On the ministry website it say "Vehicles commonly referred to as motor scooters are considered motorcycles. Depending on the characteristics of the vehicle, a motor scooter may be considered a limited-speed motorcycle. "

It also says "Typically, LSMs are gas powered, cannot go faster than 70 km/h, have a “step-through design” and automatic transmission."

However, the scooter I have can reach speed of 120km/h. Which I have tested myself. Ofcourse, scooter/motorcycles ODM posts little faster than it really is. But still say I can reach speed of 110km. It should be good enough.

I have already paid for the exam. So I would go there and act like I didnt know. lol.

Go and see. People take the test in automatic cars. That scooter sounds like it makes highway speed.

Until I got married, I was driving a manual car.

Also when I applied for M test online. I was only asked whether I have a motorcycle which is over 50cc.

"Scooter" is kind of pejorative; unless I'm mistaken, the requirement is that a bike built after the 1988 MY not be a "limited speed" motorcycle:

"All limited-speed motorcycles – also known as mopeds or motorized scooters — have a label on the steering column or under the seat. Beside the “type of vehicle” – you should see the letters “LSM/MVL”. This confirms it is a limited-speed vehicle."

If you don't see such a label I would bet you could attain your M on it as long as it's capable of maintaining highway speeds safely.

You can either be full M for limited speed or full speed vehicles. Maybe one of the instructors knows.

Good question. Made me look it up. Apparently an M is possible as long as your scooter (post 1988) is marked LSM or not.

Actually, what I'm seeing is a two wheeled motorcycle, over 49cc, capable of maintaining 100 kph. I can ask a signing authority tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replies.

Its good to know that MTO understands that not everyone would want a big cc motorcycle.

It seems to depend on the tester (which it should not) , my wife in Burlington was told her 125 Vino was not suitable, I showed them a screen shot of the speedo at 100kph , they actually said I must have been on a hill , she went to Oakville and took the test. I reported my concerns to the ministry , never heard back.

I just did the m with the a school at Durham college.
There was a person in our group on a silver wing scooter

This is per RTI's website:

"For M2 class riders who wish to obtain an M licence and a potential insurance discount.
“100cc-250cc” version is also available for M2 class riders who own a motorcycle/scooter between 100cc and 250cc that cannot reach highway speeds in excess of 80km/hr. You will obtain a full M licence with no restrictions
“50cc or LSM” version is potentially available for M2 or M2L licence holders who are looking for an ML licence that would allow them to operate a 50cc vehicle. The demand for this course is low, so we don’t run a regularly scheduled course. If you are interested in achieving your ML licence with us, please give us a call and we can discuss options with you!"
