Can-Am Spyder riders.

Its illegal in canada except in montreal :( hard to insure and register I think they are quite common in the states I remember seeing a couple in LA on vacation

Can Am Spyder, Harley trikes and sidecars are legal. All it would take is minimal push from any major automaker to change that law.

It is not the fact that it has 3 wheels that makes it illegal, it is due in part to having a steering wheel vs handlebars.

[h=2]33. The T-Rex vehicle has 3 wheels? Can it be registered as a motor tricycle?[/h]
  • The Ministry is adopting the federal definition of a motor tricycle.
  • Federally, the T-Rex is classified under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) as a three-wheeled vehicle, not a motor tricycle like the Spyder.
  • The province of Ontario has not adopted the federal three-wheeled vehicle definition nor developed regulations in support of this three-wheeled vehicle class. Three-wheeled vehicles have been registered in Ontario in the past but must meet provincial safety and equipment requirements for passenger vehicles in order to be eligible for operation on Ontario’s roads.
  • The T-Rex does not meet provincial safety and equipment requirements for passenger vehicles.
  • The typical difference between a motor tricycle and a three-wheeled vehicle is that the motor tricycle has steering handlebars and the occupants sit astride while a three-wheeled vehicle has a steering wheel and the occupants sit in conventional seats.

i meant the trex

Interesting, I wonder how it is that I've seen street legal 3 wheeled Morgans at show and shines? The plot thickens.

its cause the trex has a steering wheel, there are some street legal 3 wheeled vehicles with steering wheels that have gone through mto regulations and checks or whatnot, there was one on kijiji (trex replica rebuilt with a trex frame)

:) yes, I know you meant the Trex. I used the three examples above to show three variations of three wheelers. I'm saying this steering wheel/handlebar issue could be dealt with by an OEM lobbying the government. It's what big business lobbyist do.

There are 6 gears on all Spyders.
One reverse and five forward.

The Rotax 990 engine prefers to run at high RPMs. No need for an additional gear. (Would be nice though).

If you were to ride a Spyder like a hd trike it will lug. Shift above 5,000 rpm and you're good to go.

I'm well over 4k with my current rear tire with loads of traction to go. I ride aggressively as well, spinning the rear tire often. :-)

I swear there was a long thread about this on this same forum, basically said that the back tire wore out fast and it was expensive, something about the two front tires making the back one wobble, have to find it.
