Prefer to deal with it with a Remington 700 in .308 caliber. Also, depends on the bear and how hungry and angry he is. A raging grizzly doesn't stop for anything.

Ok Daniel Boone, a knife is handy. But learning lots about bear country and how to avoid contact with bears may be a better idea.
