Cable TV re-wiring

Yeah that's kind of scary, buddy. Switch schools.

As for the cat6 debate, I'd never suggest someone go and upgrade from cat5 or whatever.. BUT, if your house isn't wired for network, and you're pulling cables anyway, then there's no reason not to take the opportunity to wire in some cat6.

Amen.. Couldn't have said it better myself.

1) http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10513#1051309 $1.50ish a pop. I'd do at least 2 per room, probably more if you're already going through the trouble of fishing. Get the punchdown kind and not the toolless kind. I'll loan you one of my punchdown tools

2) http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10513#1051302 Toolless ones are fine for this application, even DSL. I was iffy about ordering them initially but they were out of punchdown ones. My stats are as good at the jack as they are at the Bell box and I'm not talking about the demarc (terminal in our case)

3) http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10426#1042605 Wherever you wanna run coax

4) On one end the CAT6 will be punched down at the jack, on the other end, your best bet is a patch panel. Get brackets for it if it doesn't already come with them, so you can mount it to the wall, preferably in a closet where you'll keep your networking gear (even if it's only a modem, a router and a switch). http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=84_87&item_id=99174H You may wanna get a 24-port one, but I'm not sure how big you wanna go.

I made one mistake.. You will need to get a crimping tool and connectors for RG6. I never ran coax, so I never needed that. If you don't mind waiting, check out Monoprice's tools section and order one from there

Go ahead and waste the extra money on Cat 6.

Might as well go whole hog and run Quad shield RG6 too.

You never know when you'll need all that high performance wire for the internet connection that is piped in from the street from a plain old analog cable.

Oh boy, and imagine the improved voice clarity CAT6 will give you when you take phone calls.

Edit : Hey, while you are at it, you might as well spring for the $500 Denon ethernet cable to hook up your spiffy new CAT6 jack to your new computer. Can't settle for anything less right?

:lmao:

I personally use these three:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10509&cs_id=1050902&p_id=7050&seq=1&format=2

No complaints here. Cheap but well-built.

The extra cost (5e vs 6) is negligible. We're talking about wiring a house. Something you do once.

Only an incompetent idiot would use cat5e in such a situation. It has nothing to do with what kind of internet connection you have. It's about future-proofing.

Lol.. Just the paint will be more than the price difference between 1000' of CAT5e and 1000' of CAT6.

Don't worry firestart, you won't POSSIBLY need cat6 in the next 25 years you spend living in your house... YOU SHOULD'VE SAVED THAT 30 BUCKS!!!!

Also there's no such thing as internal/home networking SO YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING THAT SUPPORTS MORE THAN WHATEVER THE SPEED OF YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION IS!!!!

This is rediculous. The guy wanted a simple freakin' tv hookup and now he's being told to run cat6 ffs. Leave it to GTAM...

If you're already fishin' wires it's a valid suggestion. Potentially time and money saving.

Also it's february

Do you have any idea what short of a hassle fishing cabling through the walls is? If you do, you should also know that fishing 1 is just as difficult as fishing 4, 5, 6, 10... So investing $200ish in adding TONS of value to the dwelling isn't out of line by any means, especially since it only adds 10% to the total amount of work.
