Buying my first sport bike soon...signed up to the forum to look around and get ideas

I would stay away from the 500 series Honda line-up as your first bike, only because it's a brand new 2013 model. Thumbs up for any other bike like a
-Suzuki GS 500F
-Ninja 500
-SV 650
- Or how about a motard haha:D?

Hmm I'd consider a motard, what are some ones you recommend? Is the DRZ an example of a motard? Not too familiar with those.

I like new only because I don't wanna buy someone else's problems. You get to know the way it should sound so if that changes, you're more aware.

Regardless, welcome to the forum!

Thank you!

I certainly don't disagree buying new is always great, however I'm willing to take the risk on used, whenever I do buy it I'm going to bring someone knowledgeable with me to look out for bad stuff.

I just feel like I'll definitely get it scratched somehow, don't want to do that to something new. :(

Hey all I'm a new rider bought my 2008 gs500f in Scarborough from cycle world and a great price thrn added a few mods(yosh pipe, grips, zero gav) they have tons of GS there heard a lot about these bikes which helped made my decision haven't been on her yet but works slowing now so looks like I'll have plenty of time to break her in… I may miss the money from lost days from work but to spend those day on a motorcycle priceless

How much was it if you don't mind? Maybe I'll check that place out

So you think if/when you buy new, you'll never scratch it? lol

My ex wife rode a gs500 & I love it. Dead simple to work on. Looked good. Über reliable. Very forgiving. A lot of fun to ride.

I would caution against a new bike as a first bike- you will drop it. Might be in the driveway, might be at a stoplight, you might even forget to put the kickstand down (it happens more than you think)... However, if you're set on new, get a naked bike ( plastics can be EXPENSIVE!)

Cheers

lol I know I'll scratch it, I meant seriously mess it up by dropping it or something. Like mess up the side, not just small scratches :) I'll care less if it's used and maybe already a little messed up.

Thanks for the post Phil, I agree I'm sure I'll drop it at some point, I hear a lot of people do

i had an ex500 for about 5 yrs. Great bike and maintenance was cheap, I did most of it myself.

Its a great city bike, and now that I am riding an 848, i miss the ex500 for the comfort and gas savings.

it is a bit low on power, BUT, if you ride it properly you can still get around ramps faster than bigger bikes.

I plan on doing a lot of the work myself so that's nice to hear it's easy and cheap.

I'm sure the power is lacking compared to a 600cc, but to a 250 it'll be great

Welcome, decisions decisions....

One more +1 for the GS500! I picked one up as my first bike earlier this year and I'm loving it.

They've definitely got a bit more oomph than the 250's, and they're pretty easy to ride/very comfortable because of the upright seating position. Mind you that position is not for everyone though!

They're also drop dead simple mechanically, so its pretty easy to do the maintenance yourself if you want.

Just to clarify what I meant, the reason I said stay away from the Honda 500's series was because..
1. Brand new line of series, so wait a year til they sort out the bugs
2. Brand new bike, brand new DROPPED bike:D
3. Your first bike won't be your last, so don't fork out tons of money

Now I also do agree with some of you, a used bike can also be a headache- so just take your time and really look at it.

welcome
