Buying a motorcycle in winter?

I've seen a couple current ads for Yamaha R6's 2008-2011 ranging from 8k to 11k (depending on km's, year, etc).. in general, do bikes really get sold in the dead of winter for a lot cheaper than this?

I ask because I'm looking to buy a used 2008-2011 R6 for roughly 8k, I have no problem waiting until the dead of winter to get it down to 6k or something...but will it ever get that low? Anyone ever buy/sold their bikes in winter? Would love to hear your 2 cents..

I have never paid more than $2000 for any bike I have ever bought so I can't comment on something as new the R6 you're looking for, but I have bought a lot of bikes in the winter and got some very good deals. I find generally sellers are a bit more realistic in the winter, also chances are you will be just about the only one who actually goes to see the bike.
Anyone who has sold a bike or car through the ads can tell you more than 3/4 of everyone who says they are coming over to see it never shows. Showing up buys a lot of good will.

It will for sure be cheaper but there will be less optons then spring time. Then you have to worry about shipping it to your house and also you won't be able to ride it or have him ride it for you to see. I say buy now because from now to dead of winter i don't think there will be much of a difference in price. and at least you could ride it and properly winterize before you put it away. again that's my opinion.

right now is when you want to buy. i bought my 08 r6 in april the prices are better now then when i was looking

yes right now is when you want to buy it, i just bought a 99' r6 few days ago, still have a month to ride before it gets realyl cold.

Now to late January is the time span in which to buy , especially a new bike . I've always done this and saved thousands ! By Feb , dealers are already preparing for Spring bike fever and so hold on to inventory .

Yep, end of season is when you wanna buy.

The market will shrink big-time in the dead of winter. If people haven't sold their bikes by January they're better off waiting to sell for a premium come springtime.

I do not think the price will drop to 6k in the dead of the winter...there may be a small drop but like someone said, you wont be able to ride it or tell if there is something wrong. Also, like someone mentioned the lack of options. If you don't get one in the dead of the winter, you'll have to wait for spring, and pay the "premium" as prices tend to hike in spring. I would say find a few that you like, talk to them in person and negotiate with what you have and close a deal now. Many sellers are looking to get the bike out and will accept a fair price just to get the bike sold and move on. Good luck.

From now until early Dec. are the best times to buy, at least from private sellers. As mentioned, from Xmas on its dead as people wait for spring. Depending on the severity and duration of winter the spring market gets going from late March onward ( usually more like mid to latter April). Then it starts to become a sellers market.

Buy now, work on it over winter and be ready to go come spring.

Cheers,
Spyug

Dealers have 600s for under 10 K but some still want to get what they paid for their bike 3 years ago. Love all the 2009 Monster 696 ads for 1000 or 2 less than 2011 MSRP. That is why they are about 10 on Kijji at the moment. I just sold my mint 2002 FZ1 for less than most are asking for a 2002 SV650. Now with cash in hand and an empty garage, I can go shopping.

There are two things to keep in mind. One is patience, the other is timing. There are definitely folks trying to off load their bikes before storing for the winter but, you`ll have the same challenge. I've seen or come across great deals pretty well year round.

the pro to biking the in the winter is that a seller that NEEDS to sell will be more flexiable as the market is diminished. If you throw a low offer out, they'd be more willing to consider it as they in theory will not be getting the same amount of offers.

the con is that if the weather is bull ****, then test riding the bike will be a problem. I've bought a lot of bikes over the winter months without any major issue

I'd like to add to this that you shouldn't expect to get a test ride anyways unless you hand over full payment in cash first.

As a buyer, I've never asked for a test ride. As a seller, I wouldn't allow one unless I was paid in full first. The risk is just too much.

That used to affect the market. But ppl are unrealistic these days....so they do the whole, "I'll just wait til spring and sell for x more.." type approach.

Only those that really want to sell will adjust their prices according to things that actually affect the market.

Go to the states, you will save more ;)

Simple answer is that you don't NEED to buy a bike until spring. The seller MIGHT NEED to unload it and you can make a lowball offer. Better chance of finding someone who needs the money enough to not want to hang onto the machine until spring.

or wait until after new years, when the Christmas bills come in and people need cash. I've bought a few bikes in Late Jan/Early Feb, worked out well.

Cant speak on behalf of price dropping aside from the fact that as you have heard, yes bikes do drop in price. I remember at the beginning of the summer the GSXR 600 was like 11 or 12 g's and now at the end of the summer its 9999. Plus you have to remember the prices drop not just because its the off season but because the next years models are coming out which matters to some people.

Also! Just so you guys know, Brampton PowerSports has a promotion for FREE storage over the winter if you buy a bike there between now and Dec 31 if you were planning on buying in the off-season, valued at over $275. Details at http://www.bramptonpowersports.com/motorcycle-storage.htm

Safe Riding.

People will sell cheaper at the end of the season too because that way they don't have to keep paying insurance on it. I just sold my 05 gsxr 750 for 4500. If I kept it all winter and sold it in april, that's 800 I would have paid in insurance for nothing. In the spring I would have asked 5000. So I took a 500 hit now to sell quicker, but saved in the long run the way I see it.

There will probably a lot of Harley type bikes up for sale in the spring. As the Rubbies that bought them are getting older they should be a dime a dozen regardless of the season.
