Buying a motorcycle in Quebec but live in Ontario.

Hey folks, seeking some guidance here!

I'm eyeing a 2021 Kawasaki Ninja 650 in Quebec and I live in Toronto but I'm pretty clueless about the whole process. Can anyone walk me through how to transfer ownership and how taxes come into play? Also, I'm wondering if I have to be physically present to complete the transaction, or if I can just pay and have the bike shipped to me?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

This topic has been covered before more than once. I'd encourage you to read over some of the previous threads. You can use the search function located in the top right of the page.

For example; Buying a bike in Quebec to license in Ontario

If you want the cliff note version;

  1. You will pay taxes when registering it in Ontario. If you paid taxes in Quebec (say buying at a dealership), you will have to seek recovery of those monies from the government after showing proof of paying Ontario taxes as well
  2. Mileage tampering has been an issue in the past
  3. Quebec allows branded/salvage titles on the road, we do not check the registration carefully
  4. Lots of vehicles from flooded areas of the US make it to Quebec
  5. Transporting a motorcycle in Quebec on say the back of a truck requires it to be legally plated
Good luck!

Looking into first private buy. The bike is in Quebec, I got the vin number. What the best site/way to check the vin?
Anything else to check beforehand? I haven’t seen the bike yet.

Personally I'm not interested in buying something major like a vehicle, that I can't touch before hand, particularly a used one. I've travelled fairly far on more than one occasion to look at a motorcycle only to decide not to buy it because of the condition, which wasn't apparent from the ad, the pictures or the conversation with the owner.

If it's priced well below the normal market value, there's usually a reason, and normally it's one that may sour you on the purchase.

If I was looking for a relatively common bike I wouldn't bother to consider an out of province purchase, UNLESS I was interested in/looking forward to riding it home.

The biggest issue with QC bikes is they can be branded which means they can't be licensed in Ontario. There are threads on QC buys on gtam. There are some intricacies (I think you need to transfer the ownership from seller to a QC ownership in your name and then use the QC ownership in your name to get an ON ownership in your name but there are taxes along the way that need to be dealt with).

Interesting. Easy to use but seems insufficient. That only tells you if the vehicle can never be used on roads in canada and I think only gets data from Alberta, Ontario and Atlantic provinces. If your vehicle is there, it's definitely no good but there are still many vehicles that won't be there and are no good.

I used it last night, but I think it’s geared towards west/alberta. I’m curious about our Ontario side. I would pay if it’s legit and correct.
You could try buying a UVIP for $20 from SO. You can technically do it online but they mail you a physical copy which is crazy and takes weeks. If the vehicle has never been registered in ON though, I don't know what it shows.

Would SO show up Quebec bikes?

So basically I have to get to vehicle office in Quebec to verify the brand, and transfer ownership, bring bike back, then register in Ontario.
Ontario will take face value of what Quebec ownership will say.

Pay taxes both, mail back difference to Quebec.
I’ve done that with BC for previous bike, but it came from dealership.

It would just be much easier if we can access Quebec title checker before proceeding the long commute.

Just not seeing many great options currently in Ontario for FZ1.
