Buying a bike (need an opinion)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I was worried about the carbed system but I guess it just takes some learning. I'll contact the seller and hope that everything turns out alright.

I just got a quote for TD and they gave me a yearly quote of $1488 for the whole year, and only $57 from October to the end of January... Weird considering how I'm only 21.

Your yearly premium is not evenly divided my 12 months. Premiums per month are higher when we ride and lower/free when we cannot ride. You may be paying for some of October, while the balance of October and the whole of November, December and January are premium free. Most bikers hibernate during these months. You are still covered if you can get in a nice day of riding though.

Coming back to the dropped bike "issue" for a moment. I have acquired 4 motorcycles so far. In 4 years I haven't had any problems with them due to them being dropped. ... And they all were. Some more than once. I've inspected them all carefully and got great deals on all. There's a huge amount of bikes being dropped on the driveway or in a parking lot. Why assume that everyone is lying? And if they are lying they may have actually fixed everything and not even tell you that the motorcycle has been damaged ... Being suspicious of everything leads to an unhealthy paranoia.

few things.

1.) Have you talked to insurance? get a price first before you buy anything or you might be in for an ugly surprise after you've done buying a bike

2.) For your first bike I wouldn't consider carb/FI a deal breaker. Of course I'd give the preference to FI if 2 were the same price, but I wouldn't put significant weighting on it for your first bike.

3.) 250's tend to hold value, its a reasonable price.

4.) Don't worry about cosmetic damage, chances are you will drop it at least once. Some people never drop it, some do multiple times. As long as its just costmetic, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

5.) Working on carbs takes experience, usually you don't have to touch FI, but FI is more complicated for sure.

Don't get a bike that has been dropped... There can be many hidden problems. New 250 cbr costs like 4 grand or something. So you can find a used cbr for cheap. In my opinion you should just get a 1300 busa. You'll be fine.

That's just plain wrong. Afgunz, I am sure you're the smart one and started on your 2012 GSXR whatever. Ugh, even without sarcasm, were you too cheap to start on a Busa or something? This forums is for HELPING people, not bullsh*tting them.

OP, you have a lot of good advice in this thread, but unfortunately there is always a tool in a herd.

And regarding dropped bikes, many beginner bikes (125, 250, 500) have been dropped, be it slow speed or just in a driveway. If the bike has a few scratches and there is nothing wrong with it mechanically, why not save a few bucks? You can buy better gear or even upgrades for those $ that you save. Also, being a beginner there is also a good chance that you will drop it too. Tons of people come on this forum who have dropped their super shiny 2012 ninja 250 and asking where they can get replacement fairings because those shiny ones are now scratched (!!).

Thanks for all the input, it's given me a lot of insight to buying a used bike. Unfortunately the bike was sold to someone else before I was able to look at it. I've decided that I'll wait for another while to save up more money in order to have a larger financial safety net.

What surprised me the most was the insurance; I expected to be paying about $200 a month for a 250, but I found a company that quoted $150 a month. Insurance premiums fluctuate so I hope I'll get lucky the next time I come around looking for another bike.

Again, I appreciate all the helpful advice!

You should still have tons of time to buy a bike. I bought my first bike (GS500F) in early November, so you definitely should have about a month left before people will decide to keep and winterize their bikes.

Lol I was kidding viper and op knows it too. Nah, I don't like the looks have the busa :) my gsxr is my baby
