Bought used bike, riding home without transfer of ownership?

So i'm about to buy a used bike and pick it up on sunday, I just got my insurance for it so i'm covered...however because the MTO won't be open, I'm thinking about riding home with my brothers plates (I don't have any yet) I'll have the bill of sale/ownership etc but it won't be in my name...IF i get pulled over what will happen?

I don't know the legal aspect of it...but I would highly recommend against this option. Can't you get a temporary permit if you can show the MTO you've bought it? They're open Today - Saturday.

Get the uvip from the seller now, and take to mto before the weekend. You will be able to get plates.

Some mto offices are open on Saturday.

I would say your just going have to wait, buy the bike get the keys and then when MTO is open get everything you need and go back another day to pick the bike up.

Mto messed up with transfering plate registration with my old car to suv. I got pulled over and was going to get a close to $5000 fine as per the officer. I was able to prove to her that it was mto's mistake. She said wrong vehicle registered on the plate. She reduced the fine to $450.

When in doubt, Wait it out

Why not ride it home with the sellers plates on it? They are registered to the bike and `borrowing`it is completely legal. Then when you get it home you can take the plates off and return them to him.

What are the odds of getting pulled over? I haven't been in the two years i've been riding. Then again thats the time when you would.. lol

with the wrong plates i`d say it`s at least 60/40. Cops routinely run plates for no reason just to see if your tags are valid, how many tickets you have, is the vehicle stolen etc.. you`ve likely had it done MANY many times before while out ridding and didn`t know because notthign was wrong, so they didn`t pull you over.. get run while u`ve got borrowed plates on the bike and see how fast the cherries come on..

I still stand behind leaving the sellers plates on until u get it home though.. this is completely legal. If they ran the plates there would be notthing out of the ordinary, and if you did get pulled over for any other reason you just borrowed the bike.. no problem.

if jesus was here i bet he would know.

using the sellers plates would put his insurance at risk, if the new owner wiped out. ounce u have ownership then u can get a temp. plate. safest way is 2 trips if u need to ride it home. or meet when the ministry is open and do it all in about an hour.

as stated before the empire has its penalties for such actions

The odds of getting pulled over are proportional to the pain you will be in when you get pulled over. If everything is in order and you ride carefully, you may never get pulled over. The one time you ride without insurance (or any other major paperwork out of order), the odds are very high you get randomly selected.

If I was the seller, I wouldn't let you use my plates as I couldn't be sure that if you wreck the bike, my insurance won't get hit. Trading plates is asking for trouble.

Personally I'd find a friend with a truck (or someone like Toyhauler). The small price for towing would make sense to me compared to the huge minus if you get caught.

Get the seller to ride it over to your place if you'll offer him a ride back home (maybe $ for his time?)

I've done that for buyers before. Just asked for a ride back to my house :D

The sellers insurance is only at risk if the OP is an un-insured driver/rider. He has already stated he has his own insurance, so that will take precedent if he borrows someone elses vehicle.

Why dont' you just have it towed home ?

How far away are you from the seller? Offer a case of beer and a ride home for him to drop it off at your place. Borrow a truck and a ramp and bring it home that way. Buy it Sunday and go back and get in Monday etc etc.

Sure you can ride it home, but there's 2 big IFs you have to worry about.

1) IF you get caught your looking at some serious charges that will seriously affect your insurance for the next 5 or 6 years.

2)As bad as that is it'll be even worse IF you get in an accident. You'll get all the charges from #1 and then some, and as an added bonus and you can forget about riding or driving after that for a few years.

I've done it. Don't get caught. Get caught and take your medicine.
