Bonneville or Moto Guzzi V7 Stone?

The MG V7 Stone or Racer would be a great second bike, The Monster, FZ9, Street Trip or my practical BMW F800r gives you almost what you want in a retro bike with the added benefits of decent power, great handling and powerful brakes (ABS too)

However, the MG would be my choice over the Bonni.

+1. I also love the Ducati Sport 1000 as well (if you don't mind used).

The MG V7 stone was my emotional bike and I came very close to getting one. The practical need to be able to use the 401/ 400 QEW to get to the good riding roads won over. So i got one with 90 HP instead of the 150 I had on my previous bike.

How fast do you go on the 401/400 that you found a "need" for 90 hp? I rode a Yamaha Virago 1100 for over a decade that had about 50 hp and you could roll down the 401 at 120km/h all day long and still have plenty of power to pass faster than that. It did vibrate a fair bit at those speeds, but never had a lack of power. You could ride either bike down the highway quite comfortably to get to good riding roads any time.

Hey Everybody,

I'm finally shopping around for a bike after missing the last 4 seasons due to a broken knee. (didn't happen riding, tripped at a concert)

My last bike (which was also my first at 21) was a Honda CBR 125, which was fun and goofy, but I'm looking at getting something a bit more mature for commuting and light touring.

I've been looking at the 2013 Triumph Bonneville and Moto Guzzi V7, but can't decide which I like better! Anyone have one or have an opinion? Or maybe a different bike they'd recommend? I'm a fan of Naked Bikes and Cafe Racers or classic lookers.

Gotten quotes at Statefarm for the Triumph, Guzzi, and a Ducati 696, I'm gonna be paying around $110/month no matter what I get.

Thanks and nice to be back.

I was in the market for a Guzzi V7 racer, but ultimately opted against it. It's more a bike you wear, rather than ride IMO. Maybe the stone feels different in the sense that it's not such a fashion accessory.

The Guzzi is quite different from the 696 and the Speed Triple. Also, it's only 50HP...

I would test ride them all and see which one suits you best. They will ALL be much different from the 125.. and likely make the 125 seem like a pedal bike.

That is if you can get one without the 200% hipster markup...

I know of no other modern bike that has such a cult following (which wasn't a numbered production).. especially after the movie Tron.

It's so damn pretty though, makes my heart hurt.

Thanks everyone for the replies, stories, and info.

I checked out the Moto Guzzi a couple times, and in the end it came down to aesthetics, I find the Racer too flashy and the Stone too simple. I want a big grin on my face everytime I see my bike, and the stock guzzi just wasn't doing it for some reason.

I also went to check out the new monsters, and was again, unimpressed aesthetically. The new headlight looks cheap IMO, like a hyosung, I hate the dual top/bottom light.

So I started checking used sales, and after a few duds, bam. there she is.

2006 Ducati Monster S2R 800. Beautiful. Incredibly maintained with receipts, and proper winter stored. the right amount of light upgrades, (exhaust, tail light, sliders) and a sweet two tone.

Placed a deposit yesterday and have a friend coming with me to check it out mechanically thursday, warm weather can't come soon enough.

thanks again, see you out there!

Congrats! Looks like a beaut!

Those have always been a favourite of mine. Jealous. Just keep an eye on the cam belts. Like the Burgman 650 transmission belt they need be changed from time to time. Well worth the aggravation as I understand it.

Congrats Nick! That looks fantastic. Glad I found this thread. I went through the exact same search. I really wanted a bike that to me personally put a huge smile on my face when I looked at it, would be around the $10K mark, great on gas, good range, huge on character, a blast to ride and not so bad to insure.

I looked at the Bonneville T100 Black, Monster 796, a used Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport, Moto Guzzi V7 Stone and even a Triumph Street Tripple at one point. The Street Tripple drank way more gas than expected and both the Street and 1200 sport were a lot more to insure. The range wasn't great on the Monster as well as it being a bit uncomfortable and the Bonneville was heavy and just didn't have the same fit and finish as the V7. These bikes really serve a market for anyone who likes street naked bikes, tradition/ heritage, great quality and loads of character. For me, they work because I'm never going to be on a track any time soon and not a street racer by any stretch--it's just not what riding is all about for me. I ended up with the V7 Stone since it's the first one that really "said" something, if that makes sense.

For anyone saying that 50 hp isn't enough, I was doing just fine on every highway in Ontario touring on my first bike, a Ninja 400r with a factory quoted 44 hp. I even got a ticket with it. I'm not sure why you'd need more to enjoy some great street riding. I'm not saying that riders shouldn't have more, it's just that I can't see anything wrong with 50 hp and not sure why a bike would be shot down for that.

Congrats on the V7 Stone. My fave of the MG line up.
Ya, 50hp is plenty. A gazzilion cruiser riders can't be wrong.

The throbbing sound of the Guzzi V-twin alone puts it miles ahead of the flatulent sound of the Triumph parallel twin. Neither bike is fast, so who cares?

^,^^ Thanks and agreed! Definitely looking forward to it. If all goes well weather-wise, hopefully will pick up the V7 within the week or next week.

Maybe this can help with anyone looking at the Bonneville? This is by far the most entertaining motorcycle review that I've ever come across. Just as an FYI/ warning--Some commentary definitely strays away from being "PC".
