Boat insurance holey @#%@...

The early Seadoo boats with twin engines are absolute pigs on fuel. So many of them not well cared for either once the prices of them came down in mid 2000's, without proper tops for storage have seen many of them a moldy mess. Have seen many for sale where the repairs needed would cost more than the purchase price. I couldn't believe the number of $ 200k+ wake boats I saw last summer while cruising around lake Muskoka and lake Joe for a day...many beside their 200k cigarette boat which was beside their 200k fishing boat, etc etc. Whole nother world.

None of the jet drives are fuel efficient, but at 2.35L for marina gas and 2.55 for Desiel what is

$500 for ins isn’t actually bad , if you have a boat with 9.9 hp, or less most homeowner policy covers that included.

It’s somewhat based on boat value and somewhat on risk . Bigger boats are often owned by more experienced skippers that tend to pay attention, 18-20 ft run abouts hit rocks and other boats . A lot of big boats don’t move often so they are less risk than one pulling up to a slip 6 times a day .
I would think $500 ish on a 30k boat is pretty decent .

I wouldn't consider $500 on a boat for insurance as being too expensive. Called my buddy to ask him what he pays on his boats...'insurance? why bother? don't need it.'

@mimico , that’s become the other “marine problem” , guys go lolapalooza around the lake with no ins. They squat at what they think is a vacant slip ( slip owner went for a ride) , have no clue what those red/green channel markers might mean , and when they eventually hit you in the harbour, they F off without a note . It’s why security cameras are being mounted everywhere on big boats .

Many moons ago people would start on a tinnie as a kid. In the past few decades, it has become like motorbikes. Middle-aged moron has no experience but a fat wallet and bigger sense of entitlement. They used to buy bass boats and crash, now they buy wakeboard boats and smash everybody else because they can and dont care. I dont normally play around the big boys so I'm not sure if similar issues happen with yachts.

I've always considered getting a boat...but...I'm too practical with my money.

Wife isn't into it. And I don't think getting a boat is a sound idea when you've never really been exposed to it outside of a few rides here and there with friends.

Maybe a SeaDoo is a good way to start into that path. Pricing is insane right now so won't be touching those.

We all know this stuff happens, but it doesn't happen every day, all day... look at the 401...2 fukn cars going in the same direction at the same speed collide all the time...every day, all day...sober I'll add...what's there excuse ?... stupidity ? Wow I just answered my own question 🙃

I wouldn’t mind a boat but all I’m interested in doing is drinking on the water at anchor. That also seems to be a big no-no though so I don’t see it happening.

You need a boat with permanent berth, galley and head to do that. No sleeping bags, sterno camp stoves or buckets allowed. No sailing while drinking, and definitely not if impaired. Ours doesn't have the facilities, and technically we're not allowed drinking even on the boat while moored at our marina, though it's pretty safe to do so if you're not making a spectacle of yourself.

I'm pretty happy at $500 for the year, especially as she stays in the water, which I would think raises risk if left unattended for long periods. OP was asking about <$400, which I haven't see and don't expect in our case...

A friend of a friend had a really big boat (70'+) in toronto. The owner was out cruising one day with some young adults enjoying beverages. No booze in the driver nor within 10' of him. Cops lit them up and said they had taken pictures of people drinking so here are tickets for open alcohol and something else alcohol related. Cops told them next time to use red cups so their pictures were not useful evidence. Owner was not concerned about the money for the tickets as he dumped in four figures in fuel.

The typical cruiser on our marina was a floating cottage. Between Victoria Day launch and Thanksgiving Day haul out there's about 20 weekends. Lose a couple to bad weather and commitments (Weddings etc) and it's fifteen weekends at the docks.

A typical weekend for us was to go to the boat Friday night with dinner en route. Saturday AM was visiting and BS at the docks followed by a trip into Orillia a few miles away. Stock up on groceries and snacks and head to Chief's Island to anchor out for the rest of the day or occasionally the night. Sunday was tidy up and more BS athe docks and pack for home.

Most owners only did one major trip a year up to the bay or the Trent.

I had a problem with a well meaning passenger. My boat was a 26 foot hardtop with full canavs up and we were docked at the wall in Orillia. After a wander in the park we came back to the boat and before I could start the bilge blowers my cousin untied the bow line and jumped aboard. The wind was going to push my boat into another docked a few feet away and I had one second to decide whether to crash or risk a bilge explosion.

I fired up the motor trusting that my meticulously clean bilge was safe and all was well. My cousin spent a lot of time on boats but all were outboards. Beware of what people don't know. Make it a point of being Captain Bligh if there is any doubt.

The shallow sandy bay at Chief's Island is a gathering spot with hundereds of boats on a good day. Drinking is OK on a boat with a proper head, sleeping accomodations and approved stove.

One day an inflatable wandered in and suddenly the jackets came off and OPP tee shirts were seen. You were OK if you were on your boat but if you were holding a beverage and wading you were charged.

Was with a few friends with boats backed in to Bay Beach @ Point Abino. We were in the water behind them, beers in hand. The cops were wading along the line waist deep in the water. Oh crap. The cops walked past us and said don't worry guys, we're not looking for booze. Something else must have been afoot.

My folks had a couple boats at different times (houseboat and then a cabin cruiser). Dad wasn't one to linger at the dock. So off you go. Every trip seemed like a slo mo cottage viewing tour. Kind of boring actually. A few of those trips and the Squeeze decided boating wasn't for us.

I've had all kinds of boats at the cottage since I was a kid with a rowboat. Nothing bigger than a 7.5 though. I do have a skidoo with no guts, just a trolling motor on a mount I made.
Last year the neighbour died and I bought his pontoon boat. I guess I finally need to buy insurance and take that boating exam.

When my original slip was across from the boat ramp , the Halton police would have an officer watching boats approaching the ramp , two cops would wait till the boats were on trailers then wander over and start pulling empties and writing tickets .
With the 2k image stabilization binoculars they have , they can sit a kilometre away and watch you holding a can .
