Bluetooth or Walkie Talkie while riding?

With The SENA headset you press the phone button at its like hitting the Voice Control Button on the iPhone 4. I dont know if Voice control was replaced by Siri on iPhone 4s? Anyway, I can press it and say things like:

"What time is it.." and the voice tells me the time.

"Play songs by METALLICA.."

"What song is playing.."

"Call <name from phonebook>.."

"Dial 9-1-1"... had to use that when I was first on scene at an accident!

All this time Phone sits in pocket.

Now that is super coool !!! :D

Acadian and Matthew..thanks for the links and info..im looking into those as well..

Without getting too 'pedestal-y', Why is it necessary to be able to do all of those things? Riding takes a higher state of awareness and all of those things will only serve to split your concentration. I, for one, enjoy putting a helmet on and being, 'unplugged' while I'm out riding.

Some of us are on-call 24/7 and can either choose to ride with access to phone, or not ride at all. I choose "ride with access to phone" personally.

Also, when riding with someone else it can be far safer being able to discuss upcoming route choices and stops etc as opposed to trying to hand signal.

Fair enough. I didn't consider that particular demographic when I posted. My work day is nothing but phone.....all day everyday I'm on the phone talking to someone about something. When I put on my helmet I love the fact that I'm 'out of touch'. Anyone that wants me has to wait...Even now, as I write this I've been interrupted twice by a ringing phone!

bingo!

.. also helps avoiding trying to get your riding partners attention by flashing lights, honking horn, hand signals etc when you're in the need to make a route decision or warn them about something ahead of them.
Works well also if you're leading/tail gunning a group ride.

I was one of those that for years thought all the gadgets must be a distraction but I am entering my second season with Sena SMH-10s and can see where they actually RELAX me while riding.
My preference if I have to make a business trip of over an hour each way (and there's lots of those - and much longer) is take the bike, day or night in OK weather. Then I need to be available. With the old cell phone I'd feel it buzzing in my pocket, look for a safe place to pull over, shut 'er down, helmet off, earfoam out, fudge around for the phone. Now I'm annoyed and at risk on the shoulder or from goofs in a plaza parking lot and I don't even know what the call is about and I have to call back because by then the caller has hung up.

Switch to using Sena, I play some preselected music that's not crazy and it puts me in a groove where I'm alert and actually smoother on the controls - go figure. Phone call beeps me, tap the unit once "Yup; what's up?" yack yack - they usually don't even know I'm booting down the road on a motorcycle. Tap once again - hangup - music comes back on.

I use the second set for my pillion because riding is all new to her and being able to communicate helps with her confidence. And again, I ride mostly an hour or more without stops so it's nice to be able to chat instead of being mentally distracted as to wondering how she's doing back there.

Reference: Shoei TZ-R with foam ear plugs, volume for music nearly full on. Intercom and Phone volume a little lower. She has a Zox helmet, foam ear plugs. Foam plugs actually improve the sound at the ears - no high frequency hash.

I've noticed an issue with the scala headset. If I switch from BT music to phone (or voice command) the BT music comes back with REALLY poor quality. The only way to fix this is to turn off/on the headset.

I haven't tried the headset with a group yet, so I'm not sure on quality. I do like the fact that the music increases/decreases in volume as background noises increase/decrease (e.g. Wind)

If you don't mind to spend some money you can have an outstanding system.

I use an Autocom System. When I ride with friends we talk via FRS/GMRS on channel 7/14. I generally talk Hands-free using VOX with no issues but can use a PTT on my handlbar if I wish. I also have an iPod playing (it dims when someone talks on the radio), I have my Garmin Zumo wired in and can use it's Bluetooth to talk to people on my phone (I don't normally do this) or get insturctions or music from it (I usually listen to music on the iPod though.)

I think the important thing, though is to have a system that can talk with your friends. If they suyccessfully use a Scala (or whatever) and you want to ride with them it would make sense to use the same setup.

Btw - sena released v4 of the firmware for smh10 today. 4 way conference and multi point devices over Bluetooth 3.0

:)

My father bought me an a headset pair (for my gf and I) as a Christmas present.

They aren't bad...in fact quality is amazing, but I have yet to figure out how the hell to mount them on my helmets (EXO1000 or RF1100).

Finding something good isn't very hard, apparently (since my dad somehow found it), but mounting them seem to be a pain in the ***.

EDIT: BT Multi Interphone. Forgot to mention what it was.

I noticed that Sena has a new product out, the SMH5.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-intercoms/sena-smh-5/

Not sure if anyone's gotten their hands on it yet but it looks like a really good bargain. I'm interested in reading opinions, especially if you've used the SMH10. I'm on the fence between the two but 90% sure I'm going with the SMH5.

Mini-Rant: I don't get webbikeworld's emphasis on avoiding the phone feature while riding. What the heck difference does it make if you're yapping on an intercom anyway?
