Bluetooth or Walkie Talkie while riding?

those are pretty pricy.

They're worth the price. A walkie-talkie (assuming you mean CB or FRS) won't get the job done. The reception is poor and there aren't a lot of speaker options. CB or FRS also are usually PTT (push to talk) the VOX (voice activated) option doesn't work well.

The Scala has nice loud and thin speakers that fit in your helmet and the VOX usually works, at times on the highway above 100 km/h you need to yell to activate it, but it still works.

Ya....That's not a great idea. You'd need to mount it in such a way that the talk button is accessable, but then you'd have a hand off the bars everytime you used it. Scalas are pricey but it's because they work.

good point, and the unit is a POS, so Scala is the best option

Sena have a BT module to hook CB Radios etc into. It acts as a hub see : http://www.senabluetooth.com/products/sr10.php?tab_menu=overview

Its the SR10

see senabluetooth.com for other great SENA bluetooth headset options

If you search here I did a review of the SMH10 BT Headset. Also WebBikeWorld.com have some great reviews with comparisions and pictures of the SENA and Scala Range,

A lot of people like the Scala because they were out first, but the EASE of USE comes from the SENA with the easy to use jog dial.

Ive used a few BT devices over the years Chatterbox, Scala, Sena and the SENA's are by far the Best in my Opinion.

This thread got me thinking about the flexibility of listening to music/make/ans calls/gps etc while riding...and since I ditched blackberyy for an iphone 4s few months ago..I was thinking..wouldnt Siri from the iphone be the best solution for riders with iphones..

only if there was a way to mount the phone on the bike and easily access the 'home" button..

Without getting too 'pedestal-y', Why is it necessary to be able to do all of those things? Riding takes a higher state of awareness and all of those things will only serve to split your concentration. I, for one, enjoy putting a helmet on and being, 'unplugged' while I'm out riding.

+1. I've tried several different systems, Scala, Parrot, Chatterbox and the Sena SMH10 blows them all out of the water:

- Simplicity (one button + jog dial)
- Reliability (has never cut out on me or required re-boot)
- Is the only one that can be charged while in use
- The speaker and sound quality far exceeds the others (Scala and Chatterbox both need the volume dialed way up to be discernible at Hwy speeds, the Sena has never been past 3/4 volume)
- Can be had cheaper than other systems

With The SENA headset you press the phone button at its like hitting the Voice Control Button on the iPhone 4. I dont know if Voice control was replaced by Siri on iPhone 4s? Anyway, I can press it and say things like:

"What time is it.." and the voice tells me the time.

"Play songs by METALLICA.."

"What song is playing.."

"Call <name from phonebook>.."

"Dial 9-1-1"... had to use that when I was first on scene at an accident!

All this time Phone sits in pocket.

I agree with you 100%..Riding does require a highter state of awarness. But its just that at times I do enjoy listening to music on 1 ear while riding and I figured it would be nice to route a trip and have the iphone be able to interrupt my music with directions..or perhaps connect with other riders during group rides...
I was always against talking/texting/eating/reading/petting pets on phone while driving..and my opinion about riding is definetely no different..

I see where you are coming from tho..and you are right..Its better to avoid all those for your own safety...better safe than sorry right?

like i said..this thread got me into thinking..and i appreciate your feedback..good looking out

good find! but i would never imagine looking at the gps while riding..thats just too much going on!

mount looks good tho..

now only if apple can make their "home" button a bit larger on the iphone..then again..im asking too much..LOL

I use a garmin street pilot 2720 on my motorcycle all the time. i have it positioned just below my gauges and its not distracting at all. its more accurate than my bikes speedometer and its great for finding gas when im in the boonies.

I picked up a pair of UCLEAR HB100 headsets last year for my gf and i... they're pretty good - stereo a2dp music, intercom pairing, and boomless microphone (they're in the speakers)

the range for intercom is somewhat lacking (anything past 80-100 ft is fuzzy), but voice quality on intercom and regular cellphone calls is great in both directions.
