Bikes do get parking tickets in Toronto ...

This is way more informative than my one-liner.. :)

That is the Coles notes version of it, it is actually about 5 pages long in the POA part II, if you ever need to sleep, try reading it and see if you can get to the end......

No pen / paper everytime I see his / her bike

Write in advance and carry sticky note with you? :)
At my customer's site there is area at the back where bikes are allowed to park. It painted in diagonal lines and is actually no praking zone. Office management is cool with us parking there and everyone knows to park in straight line. So one day I see kawasaki w650 parked along diagonal lines thus taking space which can accomodate 3 bikes easy. I thought - ok, may be first time here and now that he saw how others are parked he'll do better. Nope, same story next day. So finally I met the guy, told him how we park here and he told me that he thought lines are painted for bikes and he thought everyone else is parking wrong.
You SV guy is not necessarily d-bag - may be he does not know any better or does not realize he is doing it wrong.

Pic of kawa w650 parked alone the lines to illustrate my point:

Mine's the orange RR. The CBR250 was deemed too close to the fire hydrant I guess. The burgundy bike parked to my right, you sir were too close to me.

I think the No Parking sign should have been a clue as well, even if CBR250 rider did forget if the distance is 3m or 5m that you're suppose to park way from a fire hydrant. Too bad. $100 in fuel sure takes that Honda a long distance!

On Melissa Street, just south of King and West of Yonge there is a sort of meridian between the sidewalk and the street. It is of course packed with scooters and the occassional bike. Bikes seem to get tickets and scooters not. Talked to the PKE dude and he said vehicles under 250ccs were exempt. Not sure how accurate this is, just passing it along. Oh, the ticket is a $50 donation if you get nicked.

I would say that's policy, because it isn't bylaw. Motor vehicles aren't permitted to park in such areas and scooters are definitely motor vehicles.

You just have to mind the postings. Sometimes this can require detailed analysis with how complicated the stacked signs can get. It's super lame.

I got a ticket once near Pho Hung for parking in a loading zone - I didn't see the sign :(

The RED bike (probably all of them) should of got a ticket. You must park at no more then 60 degrees from the curb.

I've talked to some of the parking guys, most don't care about 60 degrees or the 3hr limits for bikes.

So this thread is still relatively fresh and while at lunch today I went to check on my bike if it was ok ... and I wanted to see the other bikes on the street... what do I see ? A friend of mine that I'm sure saw this post got a ticket for doing the exact same thing the other rider did earlier this week... go figure...

Got a friend to be my pointer ... maybe this will help ?

I tried to call buddy didn't get thru, sent him a text message... hope he doesn't get towed or something...

You really do have to hand it to the meter maid on this one... at least they thought ahead about what would happen to the ticket.

The interesting point there is that the painted lines don't match the signage.

my understanding is that the signs on the poles trump all ...

example, if the weather in winter turns bad and there is snow everywhere, no one would even see the lines, the pole would be seen with the sign... regardless that we are riding bikes, this parking sign applies to vehicles in general...

if your vehicle is longer and fits in the space but not between the poles, I believe that as long as your vehicle does not hang over a driveway to impede access then as long as your vehicles WHEELS / TIRES are within the imaginery lines of the sign poles then you are safe. Hence why the Gixxer in the pic did not get a ticket, his wheels were behind the no parking sign even tho his tank and fairing were a smidge over...

Yes, painted lines are generally meaningless without a sign to define them. It's still pretty misleading though, as if they want people to get nailed for it.

If your vehicle hangs as little as an inch past the sign, then you're in violation. Been there. Got the T-shirt.

cash grab :p ... weeeee government :p

Effining PEOs don't even know the parking laws... I park in the same spot every day on Freeland (or at least on the same street). There was a PEO there the first day I parked. I asked him about parking where I was. He told me that thanks to the bylaws I was clear to park there as long as I followed the guidelines online. I come out to my bike tonight and what do I see? AN EFFING $30 ticket for Park in permit parking location without a valid permit.... AND WHERE THE **** AM I SUPPOSED TO PUT IT YOU PEO??? The ticket was issued for 2 hours after I usually leave work thanks to a bug in a piece of software... I really do HATE this city.
