Bike not going over 5000rpm

I hate to say it, but if you rode it any meaningful distance with NO coolant in the system (more than say 5 or 10 km AT MOST) there is a strong possibility that you have cooked the engine.

RED means STOP. If you have a RED warning lamp on the instruments - on any vehicle, doesn't matter what it is - you must STOP in order to prevent further damage or cause other problems.

hey brian, the engine light didn't come on until I got it home. The fan was constantly coming on, but being new to this bike I didn't know if it was normal or not...we went for a quick ride when we got the bike home, the engine like came on, we rode it home and We parked it, than put coolant in the bike the next day
than we had a different issue. No power. I just talked to them and they are saying there is 2 litres TOO MUCH oil in the bike. We did not touch the oil. whoever did the last service on this bike didn't do it correctly, in my mind, all of the fluids should be checked by the dealer when you buy a bike. I'm not a mechanic. And I trust when you purchase a new bike that it comes with coolant, not to mention a recent oil change done correctly. I would not put oil in a bike no knowing what the hell I'm doing. This is why I ask my friends for help, or take it to a shop. Nor do I have any reason to empty the coolant, as they are accusing us of

Considering this is your word against their word and the purchase of the bike was somewhat recent, perhaps getting a second opinion from Z1, Pro6, RC etc etc might be wise.

I agree, and I actually had it at another shop...my bf said that we should not have to pay for repairs on a bike that we have yet to ride. And I agree. So we brought it back to the dealer....However, once we get the bike back hopefully tonight/tomorrow. we well bring it to another shop to get a second opinion. In my mind, I would of never brought it back to the dealer to begin with considering the only thing they no how to do is point a finger. You're right, its our word against theres. But as my bf explained to them, he's not a doctor so he doesn't delivery babies on weekends, just like he's not a mechanic. Someone please explain to me what the procedure if when you buy a new bike. But in my mind, thats there responiblity, NOT Mine...Yes, if you pay Joe Blow $1000 for a bike its buyer be ware....But when you haven't even made one payment yet? come on...They didn't check the coolant or the gas tank (which was by the way empty) even thou they charged us for...and didnt check the oil. I bet you they ****ing check the money thou...idoits~

THEY should be taking care of you.

Personally I'd go back to them as soon as something didn't feel/seem right instead of waiting this long

Thank you...And the bike is back there...I do however regret not taking it back sooner when there was no coolant. They said it was $250.00 to come pick up the bike, so Instead, a friend came to help correctly put coolant in the bike, the bike ran fine, than the second issue occured, thats when my bf called and said come get the bike

Im always weary about buying stuff from dealerships, sometimes they are great ppl and fix issues, sometimes it can be a pain to deal with them, and unless you are firm with them they usually won't help out.

I am not sure about motorcycles/dealer network, but maybe you can file a complain with the better business of ontario board - or use that threat as leverage to get them to fix the issues with the bike.

I personally would want to talk to the manager/owners and see if they will fix the issues...and not waste my time with the middle man / sales man. But that's just how i'd approach it. If the owner/manager won't help, then no one would...

...they could argue that....you took stuff apart, you aren't a certified mechanic...etc etc..and deny any responsibility....

What baffles me is why you're not telling us what dealership is doing this to you.

Sounds like you're in an abusive dealer/customer relationship! lol

This thread could help you gain leverage too.

We got the bike back last night...I was waiting until I got the bike back before I said what dealership it was at. Its SON...yes another bad review, and anyone who's been on the site for awhile has read the reviews, I should of known better. But For now the bike is home. And I have calmed down....but ofcourse its raining today (murhpys law) so I didn't ride it to work. It seem to run good last night. But I"m not holding my breath~

have you thought about long term damage / reliability issues that could arise??

What did they say the problem was Trina?

Said there was 2 litres of too much oil in the bike...ofcourse blamed us for the issue. We didn't even touch the oil, let alone put 2 litres of oil in it...Guess the clutch was slipping?? They dumped the oil and did a change, the bike is running better, but I still find it a little sluggish, However, I'm going to try and burn the tank of gas in the bike and go with Moosio's suggestion. A few people suggested the same thing. If i'm getting the same issue after I try 91, I well bring it to another shop. The bike well never go back to SON...I'm not impressed with there customer service. The only thing they are good at is pointing the finger. So 3 weeks later...we are hoping to actually get a ride that last longer than 5 minutes tonight...and knock on wood, no issues. Its brutal to dream about a bike for 6 years and have so many nightmares.

I had a sort of a similar issue with my 2007 R6 where I would have a flat spot at 3-5k RPM. It would go over, however, I had to crank it open.

The problem was fuel. I bought a can of fuel supplement (for one tank) and stopped pumping 94 Sunoco.

I switched to 91 Shell (which has 0% ethanol), fixed the problem.

Ethanol is no good for our motors.

(Ps. - these were instructions given to me buy a Yamaha mechanic)

We did purchase a warranty with the bike...however...yes it makes me nervous, i don't know what kind of damage was done with running it without coolant

Given the reputation SON has maybe someone put the coolant in the oil filler (possible explanation for the extra 'oil')

Hope no permanent damage was done and the bike performs as it should from now on.

OOOOHH!

Your engine may be toast. A good candidate for a boat anchor.
If it will not rev up toast is my best estimate.

The temperature light may not come on until it is too late if there is no coolant in the engine. The sensor works the best if there is coolant in the engine otherwise it is sensing air where the coolant should be. Once the aluminum engine gets too hot and that heat is transfered to the sensor (as the sensor is threaded into the aluminum) the engine has gotten too hot = boat anchor!

If the oil level was over full and there is no coolant a strong possibility is that there is an internal leak, such as a gasket, warped head.... and the collant has leaked into the motor thereby causing the oil level to read high. This is common with engines (cars, bikes...)

Coolant leaked options:
- externally
- be burned in the cylinders
- leak into the oil system of the engine.

If you ran it for more than 1 - 2 minutes with no coolant then a warped head and/or cylinder(s) WILL have occurred. Never run a bike with no coolant and always stop the engine if a high temperature indicator comes on. Do not drive that last 2 km's home because it will bake the motor = rebuild required.

Was there coollant in it when you got it? You will never know now. Maybe it was already leaking internally when you bought it. Maybe dealer topped it up and never knew there was a bigger problem. Maybe they knew. Maybe it coincidently started to leak internally when you got it.

It will not rev up, as in your example past 5,000 RPM, if the head is leaking for example.
You need a competent mechanic to investigate this one. It ain't gonna be cheap as they say.

Best of luck.

Wow. Unbelievable to read this - how do these things happen?
It's theoretically impossible...
You'd have to examine the 'overfilled' oil, to see if it was half coolant.
But it doesn't sound good!
Makes me want to get rid of my nice, reliable, air-cooled, carbureted bike right away.
Get me something with computers, solenoids, servos, FI, water pump and coolant, and flaky electronics heheh...
BTW they have brand-new ZX6 at Kahuna for $9999.
(Depending on how things work out with you.)
Looks like a shop will have to diagnose your machine.
Sooner or later it will need a compression test, and a leakdown test too, and a cooling system pressurization test.
Fairly straightforward to determine what's up with it, and looking beyond blame or whatever...
Point is, the bike's gotta be right - or who will want to drive it?
But later when the dust settles, maybe SON can explain how these things occurred. We'll all be very interested to learn.

Whatever you do, watch the coolant level. If it drops, then check the oil. Personally, I'd be asking them for a refund and looking for another bike.
