bike dies when i put it into 1st gear

how did you test the kickstand switch?
it still sounds like the switch

The kickstand switch has no role to play, because it never happens when a bike is warmed up.

Perhaps it has more to do with oil having an impact on clutch, so when you pop the first gear in the thumpers have tendency to stall. I think this works for me as an explanation.

to completely rule out the switch is an error.
It could still be the switch or the wires leading to it.
Perhaps the wires are rubbing up against a hot exhaust manifold, and only short our when it gets hot.

He'll need to clarify as I don't believe he said there is no issue when the bike is warm

spray some wd40 around the kickstand switch area
clean it of any gunk buildup and check to see that it is tight

OK, there is a mechanical switch attached to the top of the swinging arm.
You must make sure that the switch is not stuck in one position.
It must open the circuit in one of the two positions.

Either unscrew the metal arm or the actual switch and make sure the switch is working.

You should also start the bike up with the arm off, and try to put it in gear while holding the switch in both positions.
It looks like the switch must be pushed in when the side stand is in the up position.

i opened the switch and cleaned it. Put it back together and still same results.

how long do I need to warm the bike up for? (in these temperatures?)

also, i killed the battery while troubleshooting. :(
Do I just get a battery tender and charge it?

If the switch is faulty, cleaning it will not fix it. Try to bypass the kickstand switch to confirm it is not the issue.
See instructions in the link I posted on page one.

Yes. Or boost from a car (make sure car is NOT running).

can you clarify this...

does it do it at all when the bike is warm

im still thinking its the switch and you haven't diagnosed it properly

If it's not the switch and it's not the clutch plates I suppose it could be stuck dog gears or some other stuck transmission part since it dies before the clutch is even let out. Can the bike be rolled forward in 1st with the clutch out?
Maybe have a friend help you push the bike forward while in neutral and shift to first while the bike is running and see if it still stalls?

To 100% rule out the switch....continuity test it. remove the switch from the plug, run a continuity test and see whether it changes when the kick stand is up or down....Also, hold the RPM high when holding the clutch in and switching to first....if it IMMEDIATELY dies, its an electrical issue.
