Bike backed into TWICE in a week

Just as I was thinking I might be back to riding in a week or so, cars backed into my bike twice this week.

The first time a neighbour witnessed it, there was no damage and the lady was very apologetic.
The second was today and I didn't get as lucky. Plastics on the left side are damaged, signal is hanging on its cable. When I lifted the cover and saw it, my heart sank.

Given that it's a hit and run, my deductible makes my insurance pointless.
One of the fairings I can change, the other breakage is part of the entire front cowling which is prohibitively expensive so it will remain as is.

I've had a few hours to calm down but this pains me on so many levels, I can't begin to describe it. :angry4:

Anyway.

I have no choice but to park my bike on the street through the season (this winter thing is a one off that was beyond my control this year) so I'm trying to think of ways to prevent this from ever happening again.

I'm tempted to buy a couple of metal poles with a stable base, tall enough to be seen in the rear view mirror and place those around the bike every time I park overnight.
Sounds stupid but there you go. Unfortunately people are unable to look where they are going and when they mess up, they are more than happy to screw you over.

God damn it.

That sucks, buy some frame sliders ;)

Yeah, I have them.
I think that's what saved me the first time.

Second hit appears to be diagonal from the front. Maybe someone trying to do a 3 point turn on the street and backing into it that way.
Very creative-like!

sorry to hear this :( i'm so itching to get out on my bike, i think i would be liable to rip someone's head off if they hurt my bike right about now.

What kind of bike?

When I had a smaller displacement, I just accepted my bike getting knocked over.

Now I am more careful where I park. For example, if its green p parking (street side), I park at the end of the area so I only risk getting hit from one side. Or I use other bikes as buffer. It all comes down to the situation.

Not sure what your living arrangements are, but if you are downtown look at getting a spot in a condo. Then again the bike is essentially just a toy, I take good care of it but I wouldnt rip someones head off. Mistakes happen.

Hit and run scumbags are everywhere.

Someone backed into my parked car a few days ago and destroyed the driver's side rear door. Luckily the damage was isolated to the door only, but still...

Totally sympathize. Some turkey did that to my car's driver door a few years back, while out for a birthday dinner. Bent a rim into scrap while they were at. Cops couldn't care less. Getting it fixed was a real eye-opener into how *creative* the insurance industry gets it comes to avoiding responsibility.

The body shop owner was pretty cool though. Very informative. The customers in front of me lucked out in that someone hit their car, admitted it and paid the bill (when they could have run off). When I asked how often that happens, the boss chuckled: "Maybe 5% of the time."

Honestly unless you're going to plant the poles in the ground they won't stop jackasses from being inconsiderate parkers and even then how many bent mental poles have you seen on the side of the rode. Maybe Try a flag sticking off the top of your cover if you want to grab attention. Ps crappy Parkers suck

Forgot to add can you make friends with neighbours who park on the street who could protect your bike with their car?

Maybe you can get a cinder block with a pole in it it wont protect the bike but it will be the first thing they hit...which might stop them from continuing

Yeah, a flag may be better than nothing. Just have to find a way to attach it to the cover.

That's the kinda thing I was imagining but it'd be hard to move every time and I can't leave it on the street as it would be kind of like reserving parking on a city street.
Would be pretty sweet though!

I am not surprised. The way insurance is setup, most people wouldn't dare report anything.
Not that I'm making excuses for them, that is. You gotta own up to your mistakes.

Someone recently smashed his van into my girlfriend's parked car and tried running except his car was too messed up to drive away. Family in tow and all.

Get a Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man. That should catch peoples attentions lol

Talk to your neighbours...maybe someone has a few sqft where you can keep the bike for a small fee? Be it garage, back yard, or shed.

Get road spikes. Your driveway is your property, isn't doing a 3 point turn considered trespassing anyways if they're going that far onto your driveway?

Or was your bike on the side of the road? In which case, I would never park my bike there, it's open season for drivers. I've parked on the end of the driveway closest to the grass, even on driveways that are split (on the portion owned by the government) and it was never in anyone's way.
