I was there yesterday, and spent the majority of my time at the Get-your-feet-wet (no license yet for me )
GYFW was great !
I've only ridden a mo-bike twice before yesterday. 1) A CT70 when they were being produced new when I was in grade school, (heh look that date up), and another small bike at a honda dealership that I used to hang out at after school again back in the '70's
It would have been nice if the GYFW area had been just a little larger. I paced it off it was 120' x 120' !. And with one side ~15 feet wide dedicated to the "pits" around 15mph max was the limit (on the "straights" lol for about .5 seconds) And a few times there were 11 bikes riding in that area ! It was good "mini-traffic" awareness training !
Having never been to a RtR event before, I didn't know what to expect. I was thinking I'd get maybe a 2 minute ride and that would be it. BUT, it seemed like everyone was there to try the Grom (which I also asked about when I was registering ... it was a 45 minute wait at the point to try one). So I then asked about the pcx150, it was 30 minutes to wait for that. So I asked if anything was available right away, seemed no one wanted to ride the Giorno, so I said sure.
I ended up riding that Giorno for ~30 minutes before they asked me to come back in !
I bet none of the "got bored / moved up" crowd would have lasted for more than 5 minutes going ~10 mph
After watching the Gymkhana for a bit, I wandered back to the GYFW to see about the Grom. They said they abandoned the "reserve" system, as there were too many no-shows, and I could ride it immediately.
I was a bit disapointed with the Grom however. Maybe ~0-15 mph isn't it's strongest area.
1) I found that the clutch lever was only effective from the very end of the travel, to about maybe 1/2 inch pulled in. (Is that normal for other bigger bikes) ?
2) The front brake lever was also very sensitive, again seemed like only ~ 1/inch of "active" area.
3) Throttle response (for ~5-15 mph) seemed to be either "on or off", with only maybe 1/4 inch of throttle turn. And a very abrupt / jerky response by the bike. Took me a few laps to get somewhat smooth with it.
Still it was great to be able to try it ! Got about a 15 minute ride before being asked to come in. I rode a different Grom later to see if there was any difference from the first one. There wasn't
I also rode the Giorno and the pcx150.
Both those scooters had a MUCH smoother throttle response than the Grom (the v-belt tranny?)
The pcx150 was my favorite, both from a riding position, and it's smooth easy response. Would love to try it just a *bit* faster (30-40 mph).
So with multiple visits to the area during the day, I ended up with probably close to 2 hours of riding time !
There is no pre-registration. Show up early and sign the day of. The same goes for demoing the bikes as well. It's first come first serve basis.
(re Gymkhana registration)
Damn! I ASSumed the competitors were "dedicated-racers" / experience etc.
Even if I had posted a laughable / no / DQ time, I would have love to try the course.
