Bicycle Lanes

Most regular cops won't write tickets like that..e-bikes the same..they aren't really current on those laws and they just watch and shake their heads. The traffic guys will write you for it though.

For everyone's clarification, how can one identify a traffic cop vs a regular cop in Toronto?

I dip into them when the line between them and the main lane is dashed, pretty much 20m or so to the intersection. As long as the line is solid I stay away. No problems yet. I also MUST drive in a bicyle lane to park at work, so there are some unavoidable circumstances. I believe the rule is to never exceed 25m, otherwise you ARE DRIVING IN THE BIKE LANE.

Flame me if I'm wrong peeps.

EDIT...Just read through the thread....looks like I am in the clear with 20m to spare!

PS rev it living oily high octane crap out of your bike behind a cyclist while "parking" for 45m for giggles. Hehehe.

You're on your own there! :) I know some of the DVP cars have the board on top..they're traffic guys. Otherwise, they have the same cars as regular cops so it's random chance!!

Just got a ticket today. $80 for riding in the bike lane. passed a unmarked car to make a right turn and next thing i know *woop woop* Anyone know if this effects insurance?

What did you actually get charged with? Can't answer the question without ALL of the information.

Operate vehicle in designated bicycle lane. Cop says it was a by law ticket so it wouldn't affect insurance. I call state farm she wasnt sure but said if it's a moving violation it will affect my insurance *sigh*

Rob's posted the info you need already - you can use the lane for the purpose of turning, but not for more than 45m. If you used the lane to pass other vehicles and get to the intersection, that might be different - but that doesn't seem to be the charge.

"I was going to turn right, but then I changed my mind and had to re-integrate myself into traffic, kthxbye"

where does it say 45m? basically im pulling up to a intersection with three cars in it. Red light (unmarked cop car is in the middle of the 3) go in bike lane just to pass 3 cars stop make a right than got pulled over. So i didnt have time to integrate into traffic. You guys have been really helpful.

Section 886-10 B.

B. Despite § 886-10A, no person operating a vehicle in a bicycle lane for the purposes
set out in § 886-10A shall operate a vehicle in the lane for a distance exceeding 45
metres. [Amended 2007-06-22 by By-law No. 665-2007]

Then you didn't intend to break the law, but did. That's called 'guilty with an explanation.'

...and it may not be credible if the officer's notes include something like "I then observed the vehicle accelerating past several other vehicles before swerving back to the left in the open intersection, into a gap created by motorists who had stopped to avoid blocking the intersection". Not likely of course, but possible!

I just wish when I am stuck in traffic that takes literally 20 minutes to get through a light, that I could pass on the right like all the cyclists. Man, that drives me nuts seeing like 50 people get past me on the right while I move like 4 car lengths in 10 minutes. This seems to happen every time I'm trying to go north on Bathurst at about 4:20 pm. I still just sit there like a law-abiding sucker though.
