Has anyone received a ticket for using the bicycle lanes? If so what is the ticket?

I'm talking about mainly construction traffic where you are moving 3 car lengths per green light.

I see the motorized scooters using them all the time going ~30km down them, they don't seem to have any problems.

ebikes can get away with it but not motorcycles. Impatience isn't an excuse even if you're sweating blood.

It's an offence under section 886-10 of the Toronto Municipal Code, prosecuted under the Provincial Offences Act.

886-13. Offences.

A. Every person who contravenes any provision of this chapter is guilty of an offence and is liable to prosecution under the Provincial Offences Act. 3

B. The owner of a vehicle may be charged with and convicted of a parking or other offence under this chapter for which the driver of the vehicle is subject to be charged unless at the time of the offence the vehicle was in the possession of some person other than the owner without the owner’s consent. [Added 2007-12-13 by By-law No. 1367-2007]

OP may find my diagram more helpfull than all this legal mumbo jumbo. Its a simple flow chart print it out and put it on your bike so you can refrence it if needed. I also have one for thouse emergency vehicle turn around spots on the highway if you like. BTW before anyone says. E-bikes and some small gas assist bikes are still considered bycicles. Btw title of the diagram is wrong supposed to be when riding in or on a vehicle how do you know if you can use the lanes

I don't know about that. "Maximum $5000.00 fine" is pretty easy to understand.

What makes you so special, and so much different than a car that you can't wait like all the other cars? A motorcycle (as far as the law is concerned, and rightly so) is a lot closer to a car than a bicycle. Just because there are idiots out there who ignore the law and thinks owning a motorcycle or scooter gives them a licence to break it does not mean you should follow them.

Guys using bike lanes, riding on the shoulders, extremely loud pipes, speeding and weaving, parking on the sidewalks, etc. only ruin it for the responsible riders out there, as the public can not distinguish between the responsible riders and the reckless riders at a glance, so they paint us all with the same brush.

If I want to make a right turn and a car is in front of me at the red light with a clear bicycle lane, I'd just go into the lane and make the turn.

Even cars are permitted to do that, for at most 45 metres. Travelling in it is a different story, all together.

I guess that's why the bicycle lane divider line is dashed as it approaches an intersection.

Pretty much. Now if only car drivers could be persuaded to obey that solid line, rather than blocking the bicycle lane all the way on Yonge from Front, to Lakeshore. It's like they're jealous that cyclists get to continue through when cars can't, in the only place where I routinely see cyclists actually obey the law.

Where does it say they can be used for 45 meters?

(6) Operating a taxicab while actively engaged in loading or unloading of passengers.

B. Despite § 886-10A, no person operating a vehicle in a bicycle lane for the purposes set out in § 886-10A shall operate a vehicle in the lane for a distance exceeding 45 metres. [Amended 2007-06-22 by By-law No. 665-2007]

C. Subject to § 886-10A(4), (5) and (6), no person shall stop a vehicle other than a bicycle in a bicycle lane.

Thanks.

I was wondering about this the other day. Traffic was back to back along Bloor just west of the bridge. I routinely see motorcycle riders losing patience and using the lane. I have been very tempted to myself, but havent. I can understand why people do it. In this city the lines are not very clear to most people. They law might say otherwise, but I can see why people would slippery slope from ebike-scooter-motorcycle in their rationale for using the lane. My question is, is this something police enforce? Has anyone been ticketed for it? Or is it more like the whole parking on the sidewalk thing where people do it but no one seems to care?

Will they? I can't say. I have seen people pulled over and presumably being ticketed for it though.

Ok, thats interesting thanks. I know that you posted the precise law above but humor me. Would it be a simple ticket (ie like speeding) or could it be considered more seriously, like dangerous driving? Thanks Rob.

Akin to improper passing or improper driving where the road is divided into lanes (3 points), unless it was dealt with as a bylaw ticket.

Been tempted so many times when traffic barely moves and the exhaust is roasting my thighs :( and then just figure I dont need the hassle of a ticket.

I looked into this, the HTA says it's illegal. I do it anyway when I think I won't be caught. California rules.
