Best sport touring bikes for long distance

My vote goes to Multistrada 1200S/1260S, KTM Adventure 1290S, BMW S1000XR.
All 3 will be all day comfy, have tons of hardbag storage options, have excellent electronics/options/components, have lots of personality, and are in the 160hp range so will surely make you smile when you pick your spots to play.
Honourable mention goes to the Triumph Tiger 1200 which meets most of the above with a bonus of shaft drive and a minus of a bit less power.

AT1000/1100 - it can munch the miles, but the suspension is much more basic as are the electronics and the biggest minus is the 1100 just squeaks out 101hp with the AT1000 7hp less than that. Buy something with more grin factor.
Thanks for the feedback.
Some looking around to get a sense of models and rough pricing and there’s actually quite a bit that I should be happy with, especially considering my past bikes.

There's a 2016 w/ bags for sale at $12,500 which is pretty good.

Or this 2017 SDGT for $15k:

Or this 2015 Multistrada 1200 for $12.5k:

Quite a few 2015/2016 Multistrada’s in my price range and a couple SDGT’s too. And a few S1000XR’s and older Africa Twins etc. So many nice bikes to choose from - it's hard to go wrong with any of them.

That 1290 Super Adventure looks great, more comfortable than the Duke I would imagine. Also before they changed to the ugly alien looking headlight. Not sure if you have seen a 1290 in person, they are massive bikes, also tall. Worth going to GP this weekend to have a sit and see.

Rarely see that colour way on the too, nice and classy

Like any hyphenated categories, I think sport-touring is more of a spectrum than a segment.

It's bounded on one side by homologated race bikes like the GSX-R1000, super-light, capable of extreme acceleration and high-speed braking, cornering and handling, but no concession for comfort, protection from the elements or luggage.

And on the other side of the category are the baggers like the Harley Davidson Ultra, the complete opposite, heavy, comfortable, capable of carrying supplies for a 3-week road trip. Also the polar opposite in seating position: upright instead of canted forward, feet forward instead of behind you.

Anything that approaches the middle-ground between these two gets lumped into "sport-touring", even though there's a vast difference between a VFR800 and a R1250RT.

I know it's personal opinion, as some people lump the standard-touring (Royal Enfield Himalayan) and adventuring-touring (BMW S1000XR) bikes into "sport-touring", but for me, the silhouette at least has to mimic a sport-bike. So to me, sport-touring is more along the lines of bikes like: Triumph Sprint ST, Kawi Concours, Yami FJR, Beemer R1250RS & K1300S, Ducati ST2/ST4, VFR800/1200, etc.
FJR and the RT are very similar. I know I'm nit-picking.;)

tried telling insurance my bike identifies as a moped. ?

Looking ahead to my next bike with a slight emphasis on sport. Must be great at long distance and am looking for more punch than my V-Strom 650. I'll keep my current bike for taking my wife on rides, unless my new bike is great at that as well. Maybe a touch of gravel, but no long stretches of it. I ride about 30-40k/year so parts and maintenance shouldn't be too cumbersome.

Ideally 300km fuel range and I'll be buying in the late summer/early fall.

800cc and up only, with upright seating position. Let's say around $15k budget, and don't mind a newer used bike w/ low mileage. Would like a bike with more character than my current bike, but not so much character it spends most of time waiting for parts or in the shop. I want some modern goodies like cruise control, traction control, etc. Must have luggage and good wind protection.

In the order I'm currently leaning towards, I've come up with
Ducati Multistrada
KTM Super Adventure
Yamaha Tracer 900 GT
KTM Superduke GT
Kawasaki Versys 1000
Aprilia Caponord
Yamaha FJR 1300

Any other suggestions or things to think about? Open to whatever as long as it meets my wish list.
Thanks!
not going to read through 15 pages of this
the correct answer is FJR

but when a dude really gets serious about this topic
it quite often ends up being heart over head
and that's okay too

wood is not always a bad motivator

Let me know if you ever want to take my ktm1190s out for a spin. Favorite bike I have ever had. But the air box can be a issue mine was.

I can't comment much on the SDGT other than I think it's overpriced.
That SA1290 is the "T" version and pretty close to what the newer 2017-on 1290's went to. I do know they changed the heads/cams/valves but I think that was for euro4 (have no idea about durability or problems). If durability reviews are positive this could be a great mount if you like the test drive. It's been there a while so I'll bet they are open to deal.
That MTS looks good but again I'd like it better at a lower price which I think you might get from him. It's 5,000km away from a desmo service which are around $1,000 and also it doesn't come with a topbox which most do.

How about a Honda VFR1200X, Shane? I don't think it's been mentioned. Entirely capable, shaft drive, though a bit of a porker.

13 pages and this thread was started four days ago. Not a peep about seat comfort either, which is HORRIBLE on sport tourers.
