Best Helmet Selection in TO

Closing because even when they have something reasonably priced people want to haggle them down another $10.

I pay pay extra for customer service. The price is the price and I'm happy to pay because when I need something they're there and willing to help me out.

that's great, you got a good dealer that treats you right, and you reward them by staying loyal. That would be great if everyone had a similar relationship with their local stores. In a perfect world.

I am for Online buying, and I am for buying locally. There are pluses and minuses to both. What I am not for is telling people how to spend their money and calling them cheapskates cause they want to save a few bucks!

This thread is great. lol

I go to GPbikes for most of my gear. The prices are decent, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They also have a very good helmet selection. I need a new jacket and helmet I will be buying from them in about a month. I use those sites online for their video reviews and detailed information so I know about products that interest me before going into a brick and mortar. (this is just me.. I don't mind paying a little more for instant gratification)

When the CA$ was on par with the US$, I can see why EVERYONE would take advantage of that.. I know for a fact dealers used the $ to their advantage all the time. How many American bikes were sold used from dealers in Canada? There is one shop in scarborough (can't remember the name) where the owner was telling me how he sends his people to the US to SCOUR THE LAND for all used bikes. They then bring them up here and sell them for $2000 more each, and do almost nothing to them. If a local store can do that to take advantage of all the marks in Toronto.. why can't others do that? Because they don't own a store?? I agree with the guilt thing being absolutely ridiculous.

Actually I shop at more than one dealership. I have no problem with calling people "cheapskates" for saving a few bucks however when it's a substantial amount then I understand. Hoping to save $50, waiting a week, getting dinged with brokerage fees and after it all coming out ahead $25 is being cheap.

Exactly what dricked just posted. Unless it's a lot of loot support your local guys or it will only get worse.

The us-cad rate is bad now, but the euro-cad rate is actually really good :)

I'm still trying to figure out what service is being provided when I buy a piece of gear ... Except holding inventory. Which should go at the market interest rate plus opex.

I bought a shark helmet from GP bikes. While I was using it the visor became sloppy so it would just fall down if I hit a bump. Turned the wrong screw and snapped the screw off so now the whole visor could fall off. It was going to take 3 weeks for Shark to get a replacement to GP and I had a race that weekend. GP pulled the screw from another helmet which couldn't be displayed for sale so I could make my race weekend.

Soon enough everyone will just buy everything online and when it doesn't fit or isn't what they need, ship it back in hopes of the new item being right. Then when there's an issue with it ship it back and wait to hear from the "store" if it's a warranty issue or not. Then wait a week for the item to return to the manufacturer to wait atleast another week for a replacement. People will then complain that service takes too long and what happened to the good old days when you could actually go in and touch/feel the product before you bought it and get the right item the first time.

Wow I'm 30 and sound like an old man because I can already see how the motorcycle industry is going to continue to go for a ****.

I think pretty much every point has pretty much been said, but I agree with those who say that the difference in price must be substantial before I consider buying online. Availability is also a problem at times as I remember a few years ago ordering an in stock item (online) only after finding out that GP Bikes and Royal Distributing had an indefinite back order time on the product I wanted. This was an isolated incident but it consequently got me shopping online south of the boarder.

Some manufacturers are not allowing the US online stores to ship their product to Canada in order to protect the Canadian retailers. For example, you cannot by Rev It gear from Revzilla anymore. You have to buy it at Riders Choice or another Canadian dealer.

sonnythebull sir..........I have a brand new Shoei helmet for you that you would like. Its $899.99 plus tax. My shop is 124 km's away from you, but it's worth the drive as you'll get a smiley face from me.
The same helmet online is $699.99 and will ship right to your door. But you don't want that. You've got 2 kids and a mortgage, you recently got let go and/or your job simply doesn't pay you enough. Come spend 200 more at my store, with another $50 on gas and I guarantee you will go home a happy man!

How do you fail to understand people who don't want to spend MORE on things that they buy when they can pay less on the same product.
The friggin people who are manufacturing the products are always trying to spend as less as possible on making their products in order to maximize profits. The dealers who carry the inventory are always trying to spend less on their inventory in order to maximize profit.

If you want ill happily buy from the dealers who carry inventory if you are will to pay the difference on the online prices? Deal?

Great post ,2 kids, mortgage , fired and buying 700 dollar helmet. Hahaha. Can you show me an online example please of the savings that match your example

If the skates fit

Used manufacturer and revzilla videos for product demo/info and then purchase from GP Bikes usually. Just last week I got new HJC RPHA 10 helmet for easily $100+ less than anywhere online. As well as a set of gloves, boots, hat, and two shields (all under online prices).

I acquired the RPHA 10 back in fall for $219 when the dollar was closer to par than it is at it's current state.

Wait until there's no dealers to go into to try things on. How will you know what fits before you order it online? Why are you spending $700 on a helmet when you have no money to pay your mortgage and little Lisa needs braces?

"Damn I need a continuum transfunctioner so I can ride tomorrow! I'll just take a quick trip over to....ah damn never mind, they closed up because everyone just orders their **** online now."

I like how GP and Royal are close together. And I also understand why they are all the way out in Durham--lower overhead, more space, to offer more competitive prices for us. If someone posts a nice twisty route with the ending location at this bike-mall, I may be more inclined to go. But as it is, I have such limited time on the bike, I'd rather order online, and ride out north/northeast/northwest. So to some, it's more about managing a scarce commodity--time.

Im surprised shops in GTA struggle. The second hand market here is insane, people ask more for second hand bikes/gear then you can buy it new from the dealers. Its not just a bike industry thing either, people in the GTA think their stuff is just worth more then you can buy new. My favorite is ads for say a $500+tax item new and they are selling it second hand for $500... you save the tax.... LOL If i sell a second hand item, chances are its at about half the price of new unless its nib in which case its about 80% of new...

It is indeed shocking. People buy at regular prices, at prices 15-20% higher than american pricing, then pull from their European car-forum-habits and ask for 80% retail price; PLUS my sweat, boogers, and tears, "never dropped, lady ridden" free of charge. Well hot damn, must be unicorn tears to command more than 50% off retail!

Exactly what dricked just posted. Unless it's a lot of loot support your local guys or it will only get worse.

I would suggest that they do more social media-oriented promotions/exposure, specifically aiming at the younger generation that is entering the hobby VS trying to retain those that have shifted to online shopping. Bait the younger generation with "repost X,Y,Z" for $5 off type deals for increased exposure and awareness. The young guns will twit the **** out of that if it means $5 more for gas. Re-post 20 of our posts on social media to get $20 off your next purchase of $100 or more type of business.

I'm lucky to have access to free shipping from most retailers in the states, an american visa, and a means to get those goods transported for the cost of a beer once in a while, so for me, amazon/american retailers still make sense for the big ticket purchases.

That's great! After shipping, tax at the border, and if the duty charge wasn't too excessive you paid similar to what I did. GP also shipped it to my door for free also as I special-ordered a few things as well. Bottom line: good shops take care of you if you give them a chance and having them around benefits us all.

When all the local shops are gone, have fun buying your new bike online...

No tax, no duties, no shipping fees--but I agree, and will/have caged to GP/Royal during their tax free events.
:)
