Best City Commuter?

IIRC CBR125 is 12hp and Grom is 8hp. Both 125cc but Grom is down 30% in hp.

I've taken a Grom out into traffic with students while teaching.

Not a huge fan of my helmet being the same level as the bumpers on some of the lifted trucks in my area - RedNeck Central.

And before anyone cracks a short joke, we have instructors that are over 6 ft tall, they also sit just as low on the Grom.

You did lower it for less wind resistance right? A grom streamliner would be entertaining on the highway. It's probably good for at least 130. Ruins it for around town though. Grom iron butt edition?

Some brave or oblivious riders in this thread few things raise the hair on the back of my neck near as much as riding a severely under powered motorcycle in heavy traffic. I have no problem riding a bicycle in the same situation just on a slow motorcycle I'm concerned about not having the acceleration to be able to be able to get out of other motorists way. On the bicycle other road users expect my riding to be slow and dumb helps with my false sense of security and all.
Not trying to troll just my take on this.

Well, the thread started off as a city commuter bike. Almost any bike can competently do that role. An 8 hp monkey bike would not be my preference for a highway ride but I would have no issue with the occasional jaunt on the highway in one. Sure reserve power is nice to have but when using a bike outside of it's primary intention, there are always compromises.

My commute is about 8 steps to the basement. Sometimes I hate it because there is no separation at all between work and family life.

Good at times. Garbage at other times.
My commute to work is about 45 mins given usual traffic. I have the option to work remotely, but discovered - much to my surprise -that I do not like it. I feel lethargic and less productive. I usually go in now about 2-3 days a week. I would go in more often but the cost of commuting does add up, especially since my damn car only takes premium.

You’re not wrong. It does require more looking and planning ahead. Good lesson in pro activity now that I think about it.

But random events happen to us all. Friend was driving to work on 401 on Sunday and her car got smoked by a table that fell off a truck. Missed her windshield by an inch.

I’m not sure if it’s still in play, but when I first got my licence all the 400 series highways/QEW were restricted to 250cc and up.

Since we're on the subject, I was once told,
grom = get to act stupid in your town.
Supermoto = get to act stupid in other peoples towns as well.

I rode a CBR125 from Mississauga to Scarborough daily during the 2015 season - along the QEW, Gardiner, DVP, and Eglinton. Riding one of those in traffic on city streets is really no different from any other bike, but you're right about the lack of acceleration on the highway once you're at speed. That doesn't mean you can't brake and/or turn, and if you think about it, how many time is acceleration useful for getting you out of an accident? The best defence for that is good situational awareness.

Agree on the situational awareness its just hard to have your next several traffic "moves" planed if you are unsure if your ride has the beans to get it done. I'm thinking that for clarity i should have wrote "if you are pondering buying a very small displacement commuter ride i strongly recommend that you try before you buy"

I have personally ridden a CBR125 on the highway. It was an unpleasant experience and it took EVERYTHING the bike had. Maybe it's because I'm 6' 1" and the extra drag actually mattered? I love Groms and Z125s, but I can't see how an air cooled 125 with a 4 speed wouldn't be WORSE than that

Are we taking about a city commuter as in….for within the city? If so, it’s an electric bicycle or kick scooter, hands down. Travel in the bike lanes, pass the traffic sitting at lights….pass the people who act like they’re in the TDF…it’s glorious! 😂
