Being praised for driving 190km/hr????

-Hello 911. What is your emergency?
-I am stuck on the 507!
-and what its the emergency?
-I am stuck at 200kmh!
-ok, settle down. Police are on their way.
-They are already behind me!
-ok, Sir, Have you tried braking or pulling in the clutch?
-What? Are you nuts? I called you for help! They will catch me if I do that!

The Audi unintended acceleration nonsense taught me that when things like this happen a) people lie, and b) people are stupid.

And turn the ignition off.

Turning the engine off didn't work?? :S
Is this going to be another one of those "My Toyota is going out of control, and I'm going to sue as soon as I pull over" kinda events?

There is no ignition to "turn"; it's a button. Pressing it doesn't turn off the engine while the car is in motion.

To a certain extent of course, the drivers are too blame as well. But we know people can be dumb so competent engineers are supposed to accomodate for that. IMO there is not enough accommodation in the rush to get all the great new electronic gizmos into cars these days.

In the article, the woman claims she tried to use the brakes but it didn't help. The 911 operator told her to take her foot off the gas and use the brake and it magically worked.

Something is rotten in Missouri.

No, the operator told her to LIFT the throttle pedal up and then hit the brakes, and it worked. I'm sure you would have thought of this on your own, even though you didn't understand it when it was written out for you. Right?

If you go for a pilots licence you spend most of your time learning how to recognize problems and get out of them. To get a drivers licence you have to parallel park. So what if you blow up the engine? You're alive.

I guarantee the person in the vid has never read an owner's manual in her life..

And the solution was 'lift the accelerator and apply the brake" lol... just being a smarta$$. Woman must've been scared out of her mind

My point was that people should train for emergencies by practicing, then they wouldn't be scared out of their mind. Of course practising for emergencies would get you a HTA 172.

In a panic, a driver might not realise that Neutral is up and to the right.

Nonsense. It's straight up. Unless someone is using that horrid semi-manu-auto crapper just to get around; in which case, they should already know well enough where neutral is. Knowing what it does is a different matter.

Takes me back to the days of my dad's old Hornet.

Spring that pulled the accelerator back up used to rust and eventually snap, forcing the gas pedal to the floor.

It was in a bad spot for rusting too.

Yeah it's a stretch, but it's plausible. Maybe the shifter was knocked into manumatic mode by accident when she reached for her coffee cup, and she didn't notice for 30 minutes? Hard to believe, and pretty stupid, but still possible IMO.

It's equally possible that demons possessed the car...

I know what to do when I'm caught 50+
