Beer review

You didn't get the story quite correct ..... it's the longest lasting legal label dispute known to man ... LOL

The US thieves have been trying to step on the toe of relatively small brewery (not by the Czech standards, by by wolrdwide numbers) from Europe for decades, but they have been loosing more often than not lately. Of course, not on the home court, but elsewhere it would be a different story.

Budweiser and Czechvar are very two different things. I'd say it's like Honda vs. Trabant (google it if you don't know). It's not the same recipe, nor the ingredients. Go to LCBO and buy Czechvar, then go back an get a bottle of US Budweiser. It should be day and night .... if it is not, you need a medical help or something else is wrong.

You didn't read what I wrote correctly...the Anheuser Busch people bought the name and recipe but only really used the name.....I agree. Budweiser as sold in North America is utter piss. Budweiser Budvar as sold in Europe in the big bottle is a great Pilsner Lager.

Here's the top 5 every beer fan should try ... you can get most of them here I believe. Except for the last one if I am not mistaken.

Pilsner Urquell®
Budvar®
Staropramen®
Radegast®
Gambrinus®

Spoken like a true Czech!! :-) You know, there's more to the world if you just go West of Prague!!! :-)

Tend to stick to local stuff. I shudder to think at the "beer miles" imported product is exposed to. Both from an environmental impact and stability impact.

Really like the stuff from Flying Monkeys up in Barrie. They make a great balanced IPA.

Mad Tom's IPA from Lake of Bays brewing is also great...however, can be hard to find.

Black Creek IPA is also a nice one.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention Crazy Canuck IPA (can you sense a theme here?) from our friends at Great Lakes Brewing.

Steamwhistle is always a stand-by in the summer, nice light refreshing Pilsner for those hot summer days.

Oh...and sorry to burst the Guinness guys bubbles....but most beer doesn't contain any fat. And calories in beer are driven by alcohol, protein and carbs. Only reason Guiness has fewer calories is because it's got less alcohol. You could drink light beer and get the same benefit.

However feel free to continue justifying your beer-wiped-off-a-bar-top-with-a-dirty-rag-and-filtered-through-an-ashtray taste. I justify it once a year too. ;)

I can understand your issue since you drink I P Alcohol. I find that stuff nasty, and not in a good way.

I suppose I could lessen the beer miles and buy the cheap stuff from Hamilton, but since I usually don't drink that much, I like to enjoy what I drink.

Whaat??

The problem is that there's no local good beer, at least not one I'd call good.

Do you really think that the imported stuff from Europe sits significantly longer around than the local stuff? 10 days from Hamburg to Montreal, 7 from Rotterdam ..... not really an issue if you ask me.

Ontario is good ... for ice wine, not for beer ... ;-)

ps: have you noticed that the word Pilsner is used just by about every local brewery now?

There's quite a few good local beers you just have to find them. Barley Days brewery near Picton is a great place to stop on a trip. You'll taste really fresh great beer there. They do sell to the LCBO but as it's brewed with no preservatives it needs to be drunk fresh and kept cool. For me local is within a few hours so that includes Montreal and the Unibrew beers are amazing. St Ambroise beers are excellent too.

where does it say the AB bought the recipe? Read my previous post.

Ive yet to meet a "true" beer drinker. Im usually hanging around dudes that love their "lawnmower lagers" that taste like nothing. I dont mind drinking those "popular" lagers...they go down nice and smooth, much like water. Good to get smashed quick, I guess that why everyone loves em. I usually will have one or two of "what everyone else is having (beer), but then it becomes more and more obvious that this is not beer!!

Its been awhile since ive confronted people on their choice of beer! Simple fact is, they really don't care.

BUT.. what is beer drinking ? Is it chugging? Shotgunning ? Is it really about getting drunk and intoxicated ? OR is it about relaxing, enjoying the company of friends and conversation all whilst enjoying the balance of flavor, hops, and a subtle sweet taste that leaves ya wanting another sip !?

Anyone ever try HOBGOBLIN ? http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/1099/1244725-art_lagerboy_whatsthematter_800x_super.jpg
That beer is epic! If you like lagers, or pilsners, this beer is not for you.

As the slogan says " Afraid you might taste something, LAGERBOY" :D

Rant over....

Cool Beers has a couple of interesting ones.. Buzz is a pretty decent red lager, with a bit of hempy goodness, brewed in E-dot

At the brewery they also sell a Weissbier that's not bad at all, but I think it's brewed by someone else.. Grabbed a couple of cans out of curiosity last time I was over. Will probably grab more today. A bit too strong for my wife though.

It, like so many other things is a matter of personal opinion. Maybe they like what they like, or don't know better, or can't justify spending the $$ on the more expensive stuff.

Personally I liked their Fiddlers Elbow over the regular Hobgoblin but I haven't seen it for sale lately or even on their website when I looked last night. I haven't seen it in my local LCBO(live in the boonies) but apparently they also have one out called Scarecrow right now. I've seen it in the US but don't want to pay $5 for one bottle lol.

Exactly .... AB was trying for years to buy a stake in back then Budvar which was owned by the state (as everything was until early 90s) and they pretty much put a ban on it, once it was clear what AB is planning to do. When they didn't succeed to be part owners, they were trying to buy the same hops. Well, that didn't end up happening either ... so you don't have the recipe, you have different hops and I bet their water is not as good either ... naturally you end up with AB crap. So what do you do then ... you are trying to muscle the little guy in courts trying to persuade judges that the brewery which has brewed beer since end of 12th century should not be allowed to use the trademark because there's something called AB who started to brew in the end of 18th century. I am surprised thay haven't tried to get a patent on the AB crap ... LOL

As far as beer goes, no there's not ... LOL

Seriously though, there's a few labels out of elsewhere I enjoy too. But they are very different than any of those I listed above. I drink them as more out of curiosity. When it is about ordinary thirst. I always come back home. There's nothing like that ....
