Been thinking about a Harley...

Umm....ahhh...sigh....on your sweet CB1000R...if you extended the forks 6 inches and put a solid lowering strut where the shock should be.....ahhhh....ok, maybe it is a matter of taste I fold. But you have to question the motivation to do that. Try to imagine a life without an audience. Nobody would be motivated to make those bike destroying mods. So what does that say about motivation? When are guys going to start wearing high heels? Can't be too far off.

High heels were worn by men before women, they were design to provide better grip in the stirups while riding horses. Women adopted the fasion to be more "man like" and seen as a equal.

Truth is, that's why they sell so well.

Lada's sold well too.

Just sayin. As I commented earlier, big sales figures don't equate to anything being the best, it often equates to either a price advantage, a following, or fanaticism. HD has the latter two locked up tightly.

Still not saying they don't make a decent bike, but the "they're the best!" fanboyism is undue.

HD ownership gives you so much more than just a bike to ride around on. So much more. It's all encompassing. A brotherhood, a lifestyle, respect, envy, credibility, everything good in life. Even some of the more mundane aspects of life like "what should I wear today" or "what's my opinion" or "where should I ride today"? can be addressed with a quick HOG consultation. "What's my favourite day"? (Fri. 13) "What's my favourite saggy body part"? (Tits, male or female) HD is the best alright. Take a test cruise today!

inreb, not sure if you're being ironic or a D-bag with your replies?

I'm going to say ironic for the time being. But your message is clear, people can go over board with a "culture" and use it to dictate a ignorant & misguided lifestyle. It can happen with any brand (Pepsi vs. Coke - Sony vs. Microsoft etc.) But reading all of the posts in the thread I started, I have not seen anyone posting anything to that extent. I'll say it again, what I was trying to start a thread on was one that focuses on the evolution of a rider and how their thoughts, passions can/will change over time for many reasons. I am almost regretting using a brand in my original post as I feel it takes away from the real message of what I want to share.

Who I am, and what I do has little to do with what I ride. I just like nice bikes. It so happens I bought the nicest. So, if today I want to be a pirate, that's just what I'll do. Tomorrow I can put on a hipster uniform and do that. If I want to go squid, that'll be my choice too. So what? You need to worry a little less about appearances and focus on what you enjoy. I know it irks a lot of other bike owners when I call HD the best. I guess that's why I say it. Truth is, that's why they sell so well. To the OP, you can't go wrong with a Harley. You'll never regret owning it, and no MC company has done more for the motorcycle community than HD.
why cant you just be yourself instead of dressing up as a pirate/hipster/squid ? you cant be that much of a loser

Guys, a subtle hint about some of Inreb's posts.

;)

You oh so sorely missed the point. The fact it's the best selling bike has more to do with the hype and fanaticism over HD, not necessarily the bike itself, it's quality, or it's mechanics. In some of those aspects the metrics win, and they win hands down on cost of ownership & cost of insurance, and the aftermarket is certainly there as well for Metrics if that's part of the essential ownership experience for you.

To make a comparison...Android is the top cellphone OS in the world, but that doesn't make it the best. Of course, to the hard core fanatics (the ones who blindly sing it's praises at every opportunity, wear branded clothing, get android tattoos, put android car stickers on their vehicles, etc etc - see any resemblances to the HD culture?) Android is the greatest thing since sliced bread - it dominates the market, it must be the best...right?

The fact that there are other OS's out there, some of which do things better, with far less issues, a smoother interface and generally a (well documented) overall better ownership experience is completely irrelevant to the hardline fanatics who refuse to consider the alternatives just because they're die hards.

That same situation happens a lot in the HD world, case in point right here.

This is something that's always amazed me about the Harley crowd. For so many it's about this rebel image, but in reality the majority are the epitome of marketed slaves.. Walk into Claires (and I imagine any other HD dealer)... if you don't look right as you step in the door you'll have a bit of trouble finding the bikes. The main 'hall' is filled with every imaginable accessory, and the bike related merch is outnumber by the crap you buy to H-D brand you life. The free-riding rebel has become the freed-from-their-hard-earned-cash corporate shill

And to Inreb's point, it seems because an accessory is available, it's automatically a must have, regardless of what negative impact it has on the motorcycle doing what it was designed to do. Looking the part is all important and that is as good a sign as any that a culture has been sold

Edit: And I wasn't referring to this gem haha

riding the same bike as everyone else shows how much of a free thinker you are...put on your pirate costume, etc.

More BDSM costume than pirate getup if you stopped to FREE THINK about it. Personally, I would totally support tricorn hats, long coats, pistol braces, cutlasses, buckled shoes and parrots (totally hi-viz). Eye patches, hook hands and peglegs might be pushing it though. Certainly more stylish than whatever we get served today. VELCRO! GORE-TEX! D30! KANGAROO LEATHER! Clothes make the man but motorcycle gear unmakes him. When the other prevailing aesthetic is a baffling mix of the Micronauts and TMNT, finger pointing is basically impossible.

Yep, I know. Many of you will say I am either stupid, crazy or a little bit of both, But the fact remains I can't get the thought of owning a HD out of my head. I must admit it is a "bucket list" kind of thing, my dad always talked about getting one when he retired, but alas he took ill and is no longer with us. I think part of me wants to do it for him and part of me wants it for me. I know the history, I've read the reviews and horror stories, but the thought just keeps spinning around. I'm not 100% sure it will ever become a reality, but as I get older ( and sadly ride a few less miles ) I want to ride them on something I never would have even considered a few years ago. In my "short" riding history I've logged tens of thousands of KM's I've seen coutless cities, towns and villages. Amazing people and those I wonder how they are still alive and on the road. Maybe I'm just babbling, but I wanted to share these thoughts with and get some thoughts, reactions and/or comments.. What's your riding wish or dream or crazy idea?

Thanks for reading..

Sorry Jampy00, I guess I'm being a bit of a dbag but you're not surprised, are you? HD in the title of any thread results in this type of discourse. Every time.
To answer your question honestly. I'm living my wish. I have a small fleet of unremarkable bikes I use to roam the country side and occasionally tour with. There is no pride of ownership in the big hat Texan sense but I'm proud to ride what I ride.

That was one of my Grandma's favorite expressions "all Hat and no cattle". #onebighappyfamilyHD

Pirates are not losers dude. They ran the Caribbean for decades and got rich doing it. You can be yourself too, but that might be kind of boring. Why be boring?

I know exactly what you're saying. It's time to settle down and get into a more serious form of motorcycling. All this "they all look like pirates" nonsense has its roots in the green-eyed monster, so pay no attention to it. Get a Harley, join your local chapter of HOG and go for some weekend rides that end with a steak dinner at a nice restaurant. Hook up with people and go riding across the continent on group rides. Feel confident in the fact that you're riding an extremely reliable machine (contrary to the lies spread by the envious people) that parts aren't always "on backorder" for. You won't lose most of a summer waiting for parts if you drop the machine, HD has the best supply chain in the business.

Harley owners are proud of their machines that they've worked hard to buy. They displayed that in clothes long before the MoCo got into selling them. A Harley is a simple, easy bike to work on running back to the old WW2 Knuckleheads. The Army demanded they be fixable at the roadside with a simple set of hand tools - and they're still that way today. You can go race around on ridiculously complex uncomfortable litre buzz-bikes, or you can settle down and really enjoy riding on a cushy Electra Glide. There's a reason they say "Someday you'll all own a Harley". It's the storied bike of doctors, lawyers, cops and outlaws. The most fun on two wheels you'll ever own.

Human nature is so predictable like the sunrise.:lmao:

If it's what you want to ride, go on a demo day, or rent one for a day. You will have 1 of 4 reactions: love it, hate it, indifference.

Yes the motorcycle comes with a dose of lifestyle, right from the dealer on down to the owners: https://rideapart.com/articles/how-to-sell-a-harley-davidson

I've been on a Davidson 3 times, demo day, rented one for a day, and rode a friends.

Would I own one? Ehhhh maybe some day, as a second bike, for going slow, a ride that my wife would hop on the back of. She felt safe on the back of the Road King.
