Looks pretty bad. Rail and road links severed. Need to fly or drive through the US to get to vancouver now. @Lightcycle how are things in your area? Rail link down will not help the supply chain mess.

Have a few friends out that way. Evacuated in the summer due to forest fires….and now this.

Spoke with a few and they’re all good but needed to leave the area.

Getting more about this now. It appears that all the burnt out trees from the forest fires and bad forestry practices are exacerbating the problem. Crickets in Canadian media about this.

My 77 yr old cousin lives in Hope BC. Haven't seen her post anything on fb in a while. She's as tough as nails tho.

Someone I know out BC has been posting about the traffic backlogs on FB. Recently posted a aerial photo of one of the roads washed out (1 lane) of what appears to be a mountain road, that doesn't look like a easy fix.

Glad to see BC's long running stance of tax modification behaviour is doing it's job of saving the environment.:rolleyes:

Those Abbotsford area floods were in the spring from a sudden thaw and snowmelt run-off. It's unheard of for a fall storm to cause this kind of widespread flooding. The volume of rainfall is incredible.

While the logging has a huge impact, the forest fires are also a product of unusually long, hot and dry summers (BC joins the entire west coast of the US, Australia and Europe in struggling with that problem).

It's actually amazing how few people have died, considering. A lot of animals have died, though, as the Fraser Valley is full of farms. A friend of a friend lost all their chickens and had to bring calves into the house to save them from drowning. There's emergency work going on now to get vets out to the farms to try and save as much livestock as possible, as a huge percentage of their food production comes

I'm not sure how BC is expected to control what is a global issue? On the contrary, clearly they're impacted more than most regions because their geography and climate is more fragile, so it's hardly surprising that they would want to do what little they can.

If anything, the post above about their forestry practices suggests a more aggressive approach? Not that we'd like that here with the consequent impact on wood and lumber costs...

This is all well and good but MY NEW PATIO HEATER IS STUCK IN DELTA BC!

First world problems. Hopefully someone will build a bridge to the new island of BC.

More seriously….maybe people will look a little harder at soil erosion and how forests really keep things in check when it comes to landslides. Logging the crap out of places sometimes has consequences.

You joke, but it's yet another blow to an already battered supply chain. Having the largest port in the country backed up with cheap Asian goods just before Christmas is going to be interesting...

I’m only slightly joking. I want to sit outside with my hot chocolate.

Okanagan is not in the affected area, but we do get a lot of supplies from Vancouver. I have a lot of Amazon and eBay packages held up in Richmond. No ETA on when deliveries will resume.

Right now we're facing a COVID-style hoarding issue where everyone's doing a run on the grocery stores. Lots of empty shelves.

So irrational. People seem to forget that we're surrounded by farmland producing more fruits and veggies than we can consume, our beef comes from Alberta and pretty much anything frozen in a bag comes from Ontario.

But no, panic sets in and people buy up all the produce which will eventually just rot in their fridges.

Stupid.

Will FedEx TP for $200 a roll.

None of the homes in that area qualify for insurance. There are good reasons for that. It's a flood plain and it always has been a flood plain. A flood plain is a flood plain, spring, summer or fall.

I thought it was an drained lake bed?

Q: How do you get people to hoard?

A: Tell them not to.

Around Abbotsford, maybe. But the flooding and slides have extended way beyond just that bit of the valley. Merritt and Princeton aren't anywhere near Abby, nor are the spots where a number of highways have been washed out...

And I was contrasting this highly unusual weather event with 'normal' weather, as this is not the same as previous flooding.

Amazon just refunded my order for Sony WF-1000XM4 ANC earbuds. Said it was because of BC freight embargo. Suddenly dons on me how serious this is.
