ATTN Photographers - Need Camera Recommendations!

So I recently took up photography as a hobby, purely for sh*ts and giggles and I'm starting to really enjoy it.

I think it's time for me to pick up a decent camera.
I basically shoot anything and everything, I've been using my iPhone 11 and have been able to take some great (imo) shots.

I need something versatile that will allow me to shoot different subjects/views/etc.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I have a decent amount invested in DSLR gear. If I was starting now I would probably do 4/3's so you have it with you more often.

When i was buying, canon was the right choice for me. AF on Nikon sucked donkey balls. The last time I looked at dslr gear, i think Nikon had a slight edge for me.

I have never shot 4/3 so I cant give you insight there.

In general, buy once, cry once. The most expensive glass can normally be sold for almost the buying price so your ownership cost is lost opportunity cost. Mid to low priced gear is a really tough sell in the used market and normally costs much more to own (and takes much worse pictures).
 
Many years back, I spent a good chunk on a Canon DSLR setup. Used it for a bit, but the end of the day it was just too much to lug around. Both in size and weight.

Really like the Sony RX100's (two of them, I think current is Mark IV) that replaced it. Nicely compact, great output. Still doesn't fit in a pocket though so by default most pics come from iPhone.
 
I use an Olympus EPL5. Does most of what the 35 mm cameras can but smaller lenses.

As @jeff96 I'm using an Olympus. I bought a used EPL1 and added some lenses and the photos that it takes are beautiful. Don't use it as much as we don't travel as much, but overall the quality of the photos is very good for the price.
 
How much cash you got? This can be a black hole. Olympus just got taken over for its camera business but the micro 4/3 stuff is top notch. If you can wait and keep an eye on the prices you can get a semi pro EM1 mk II for just over $1k (It’s at 1.9k right now but it keeps dropping in sales) which sounds a lot, and it is, but look at the price of (ex) flagship models in other brands and get back to me. Or, get a completely capable EM5 mk I, II or III depending on your budget. Small form and great lens selection at all budgets depending on what you want. I love my Olympus it takes great pics, I’ll see if I can dig a few out.
 
Camera's are pricy, is it true that one can pick up a good deal at a hock shop?
The last time I checked at theHenry's used camera store they had either used stuff at not any significant discount or junk. Any pointers as to where to pick up a decent 4/3rds at a decent price?

I used Kijiji. Do some research, see what to look for, and have patience.
 
I wouldn't go with a pawn shop. They'll tell you otherwise, but I wouldn't be sure it isn't stolen. My stuff came from kijiji.
The Olympus body EM or PL will allow you to buy an adapter which will let you use older lenses from other cameras in manual focus mode. Panasonic needs Panasonic lenses

So, Canon colours are a little more accurate out of the box.
Nikon has a bit more vivid colour response.
Sony is good, but from what I've seen has more of the purple "fringing" than Nikon or Canon.

Look at what you want to shoot. DSLR lenses tend to be specific. A decent high-speed shallow depth of field (bike at race tracks, portraits you want blurred backgrounds in) can easily cost $1200+. General purpose are $600-900 depending on what you want to do.

So, as a professional in the field, you need to decide what you want to do first --- general purpose, without needing to carry around a whack of lenses, or more generic all-in-one.

What's your budget? That should be the first thing you're looking at. It will determine what camera and lens options are best.
Megapixels does not equal quality. I've seen many pics on 14MP cameras that completely outshine 21MP cameras when printed at large format size. Do your research.

I switched from Canon to Nikon 'cause I like more saturation in colours straight off the sensor.

Used cameras are a great deal as they don’t keep their value as much, used lenses do though.

Henrys will never give you a good deal. Kijiji is way better.
 
One last thing...price out a 150mm-600mm lens for any other system. The equivalent for micro 4/3 starts at $600 which is nuts for a great wildlife lens. At that starting price you need a reasonable amount of light though.
