Attawaspiskat - $92.5 million transfered, poverty still reigns

I'll fix up that puny town for $80 million, saving taxpayers 12.5 millies.

As I remember, that 92.5 million was over a 6-7 year period and worked to $7-8,000.00 per resident which had to cover all housing, drinkable water, sewage, roads, administration and salaries and all other costs of running a town.

good thing they are paying taxes, oh wait

That works out to just over $1000 per person. In T.O. that wouldn't cover snow removal much less all the other costs.
Not paying taxes was one of the very few real benefits of having their country stolen out from under them.

Native affairs is a quagmire..makes for great headlines..but I don't think a headline or one page op-ed piece can sum things up.

A pretty good article. I had no clue.

"The federal government is not keeping track of what it does, how it does it, or whether what it is doing works."

People are upset with $90M being given away (over six years), but, in terms of Federal Government spending, if you compare that $90M to what they spent on those, what were they, fighter jets? it's like a guy making $40K a year, spending $400. But, I guess every bit counts.

Can you explain the math behind your calculation of the per resident expenditure? The population of Attawapiskat has apparently fluctuated between 1,300 and 1,700 people over the last 7 years.

It works out to be north of 50K per person over the time period which is ~10K per year. For a family of four that works out to be 200K and ~35 to 40K per year...

In all fairness this was not entirely for housing (and material costs should be much higher there), they used the money for schools etc. They also used the money for a hockey arena and a new Zamboni... No doubt the money was not spent well but before we send more I would hope we would at the very least make sure that money will be spent well--if not also find out how previous money was spent.

edit, I should also add that the money was not given directly to the residents, it was to the band...

Just for comparison, the town my folks live in has a population of 700 and they got a new cooling system and zamboni for their arena 2 years ago..

But did they do it with living conditions like Attawaspiskat?

Some of them, yeah!! :-) It's not the same thing obviously because it's not a reserve..but seriously, does a town of 700 need a new cooling unit and zamboni?? Some people in rural Ontario live hand to mouth..seriously..it's not great. I suppose they need some recreation.

I agree, it is time. So lets finally pay them what we owe them instead of just hoping they will go away.

Pay them crap. We're here, they're here, deal with it and start living like humans.
