Are Supersports Over?

I think there is some confusion between the Supersport class within racing (generally the 600cc class) and Supersport as in the class of bikes with clip ons and full body work and rear sets. Insurance companies used to have a black list of SS bikes. It had nothing to do with the engine size. There were 400s on the list when I had it and it listed under the Ducati heading "all Ducatis are SS". Yes a 1000cc race replica is a "Superbike" like the CBR1000 etc. But it is also a SS bike in terms of insurance classification. But Superbike is a term for the class within racing that generally has 1000cc engines.
There is no argument to begin with, good for him to use his SS on the track like he claims but some may want it for the street regardless if they'll ever use the full power. That's why SS are street legal and not just restricted to the track.

Don't think so...most see my point...there is no legal way to use that HP on the street...that's My Point. No different than buying a 700hp sports car and driving it around in down town traffic...why ??.
Look i don't care what you ride or drive..that's up to you...but when i see those yahoos riding like irresponsible idiots ( usually on ss bikes) on the street putting other peoples lives in danger...well that pisses me off . Don't get me wrong..i love motorcycles...nothing nicer than a R1M and i would like to own one...but not for the street

Gave up on my full SS due to comfort. In the twisties, it was great. Getting to the said twisties, not so much. Got a sport bike instead. Though, in it's day it was a SS. Go figure.
I mean't like basmn's 150 hp ST is almost as unusable to it's full potential on the street than the 200 hp bikes he mentioned, besides the more comfortable riding style and all. So what's the argument?
Even an MT-07 has more than enough to break the Ontario limits, there's many bikes out that are non SS capable of breaking the limits easily here and being as dangerous as an SS.
All I'm saying is some may not want an SS for the streets but some do despite how much it doesn't make sense. Insurance is kinda ending the era though
Insurance was never my killer, I started long before rates went to the moon and now i'm old my rates are 'ok' . What killed me was paying full insurance on multiple bikes, I had to pick which one to ride and my sport tourer was a better fit.,
But being a young guy ins would choke a lot of folks, and insurance companies dont like SS a lot right now.

Except it's more comfortable, gets better mileage, is likely far cheaper on insurance for most people, less theft risk, might even perform better off the jump.

I think the difference is the power is more usable on the ST where the R6 or any other super sport the power is high up in the revs and isn't very usable for street riding so in order to hit that power band on an R6 for example you need to be in the 10000 rpm range, so if you are in first gear with stock gearing that's roughly 80km/h, 2nd gear is 100, 3rd is 125 and that's just the beginning of the power band, so if you want to feel what the bike can do (who doesn't, right?) you gotta take some risks whereas the ST gives you all that power at a much lower RPM and speed and that makes it a more suited bike for the street, and more fun to ride, not to mention the suspension, seating position, gearing etc
you don't need lots of hp to brake laws, I can go over the speed limit in a school zone on my 50cc pit bike.
my reply to your insurance ending the ss era argument still stands, if the only issue was insurance most riders over the age of 35 would all be on ss bikes, no?
Yes absolutely.....and with the re-tuned R1 engine it pulls like a freight train in any gear...when it hits 7500rpm it then goes into oh s#%& mode...yes i have done this on the track...but mostly with all that hp and torque it is a pleasure to ride through the mountains....very little shifting..just throttle input..makes for a more pleasurable ride.
