A Kitchener man had his car impounded and his driver’s licence suspended after police spotted his car travelling at more than 220 km/h on Hwy. 401 near Port Hope yesterday.
Ontario Provincial Police were patrolling the highway from the air on Monday when they spotted the black Chevrolet Cobalt travelling eastbound near Wesleyville.
The car was clocked at 222 km/h before officers on the ground pulled it over and arrested the driver.
Matthew J. Lichty, 30, was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana. His driver’s license was suspended for seven days.
Lichty is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on Nov. 7.
The OPP impounded two other vehicles during the same five-hour patrol after they were clocked at speeds of just over 150 km/h.
Lawrence Wilcox, 70, of Chilliwack, B.C. and Melanie Iordanoglou, 36, of Whitby, had their licenses suspended and vehicles impounded for seven days.

only a SS version of a Cobalt can achieve those types of speeds.

Would have been easy to spot though, all the parts flying off and the body work flapping in the wind. :lmao:

Lol! Chevy...

Not entirely true though, I've seen a stock N/A 2010 Lancer ES pull 231km/h on the 407

I had a 98 Dodge Neon, N/A that did 240km/h on the 407 with the Mopar ECU.

A stock cobalt can just, if lucky do 200km/h top speed. The report says it was "over 220km/h".... had to be an SS.

A 150hp Lancer doing 231? Yah, ok buddy. Thats some serious speedometer error.

Chevys used to be limited to 190. My buddy's old 2001 Z24 was anyway.

My old Mazda protege 94 maxed out at 200 i was happy with that:cool:

The speedo tops out at 220. Speed was measured with radar, car was going slightly downhill after an easy curve. Not saying that speed was maintained, that was top speed though

Not my car so I'm not going to start a pissing match though.

The only way that lancer (even with the upgraded 2.4L 168HP engine) is going remotely close to 231 km/h is if its falling off a cliff.

I drive an Evo, so I'm not here to start a pissing match like I said, just saying what I seen. He said it was stock, if he lied that's his business.

SEVENTY YEARS OLD... and he's doing 150km/h+? Good for him!
