It looks like it came with android 7.1.1 and can go up to 9. The latest version of android is 15. RE app needs android 12 or higher to run. You're SOL on that phone.

FWIW, I bought my mom the $200 motorola G 5G from costco and she is happy with it. Not the best camera in the world but the phone works fine and was miles better than her old phone (Google phone from a similar vintage as yours).

Yep, your phone is running too old of a version of Android.

Are you using a really, really old phone...or have you just not updated the one you have?

He has an A8. ~2016. Maxed out at 9. Not sure what version he is (was?) running.

Doh, I see he mentioned his phone model, I missed that.

At 9 years old, it's served a good life and is indeed going to be outdated software wise and issues like app incompatibility is only going to get worse, so yeah, it's time for an upgrade.

I'll go phone shopping next week. B will try to talk me into an iPhone. NO WAY!

What exactly is your dislike?

If you were using an iPhone to play devils advocate, you probably wouldn’t be having these problems as iPhones are eligible for software updates to the current version for phones up to eight years of age, and security updates sometimes longer than that.

Considering most apps will not automatically cease working on older versions of the software for at least 3–4 years after that, you wouldn’t need a new phone at all yet in this scenario.

To each their own, however there is very clear advantages when it comes to software and security updates.

The only devices I have had that became garbage due to lack of OS updates were Apple. He can pick up a decent new android for $200. What's the cheapest iPhone? $1000? Does it last five times as long? Does it do anything better? To each their own but imo apple can be better if you are all in on their ecosystem (watch, airpods, etc). If you are like most people and mix and match, apple has no advantage imo.

There are several options to picking up a less expensive iPhone. Usually last years models are cheaper. Carrier discounts etc.
I picked up a iPhone 13 mini 2 years ago replacing a 7 year old SE. The new phone is way better and they have done a lot of improve the battery. It's a great phone and partly why I haven't put a GPS on the bike the battery lasts so long now I can just check Google maps when I stop. In terms of updates it's best not to be on the latest and greatest, acutally 1 whole update behind is best, as Apple takes this long to update everything properly.

But It wasn't cheap either as I was feeling a bit spendy and upgraded the storage to 256...
