Anyone volunteer?

My old boy was coaching baseball before I was old enough to play. At 15 I started coaching with him. Then I went on without him, and added hockey to the mix. I gave up when I was 54.
I'm considering going back to the rink next winter. The house leagues seem to need time keepers. It pays (not sure how little), but that cash can go to a good cause (of choice).

For about 3 winters I volunteered full time at the North York Harvest Food Bank sorting food/ I would secretly deliver carloads of pet food they were not allowed to donate to the Toronto Humane Society. I also volunteered on the trucks of Second Harvest as a helper to the drivers picking up food and dropping it off at various locations across the city. I've also designed and facilitated many workshops to the general public and seniors groups on general horticulture or healthy soil principles for community gardening. I also used to assist with the startup and development of local community gardens. And for 10 years I volunteered with the Master Gardeners of Ontario giving free advice to the public on a range of horticultural issues.

But lately it seems I've just been volunteering my time to lead group rides for the geographically challenged in the motorcycle community.

And we love you for it @shanekingsley! Always appreciate the good rides.

Turns out my wife signed up for setting up the hall and baking for our sons scout group. We’re considering both signing up for scout help during the 2 weeks in the Barry’s Bay Area.

Just need friends with cottages in Barry’s Bay lol

I’d assume you need some types of good skills in a sport to coach/ref it. My parents weren’t sports oriented at all as it was all about work work work, so we don’t have that experience.

Time keeping seems simple enough.

It depends on the level. At lower levels, they are happy to have someone with a pulse. Another option is "trainer" which means you bring the water and can do first aid when required.

Most of the umpires and refs I’ve seen in action have no idea of the rules and are generally blind .
Oh wait , that’s why so many quit reffing . Beating them up in the parking lot never helps either .

Yup. People take this stuff too seriously.

You want your kid to be the next Ronaldo? Sign them up to a dedicated camp for soccer stars. Not Tim Bits.

Weird thought on volunteering. If you want to do something you like and help a charity or cause you like, they may not be fully related.

Get a part time job doing something you like and donate the wages to a cause you like.

You may want to find a cure for cancer but couldn't pass kindergarten med school. So get a job at a tool store, boat yard, garden centre and donate the days or evenings wages to the cause.
