Anyone spruce their ride using LED's?

I'm looking to buy LED lights from eBay and put them on my ride.

a] Is this a good idea?
b] Is this street legal? I don't want to turn them on only in a parking lot - I want to ride with them on at night but I don't want the popo to frown.
c] Anyone who's done this have a particular brand / preference?

I'm looking at the white or blue ones here >> http://www.ebay.ca/itm/84LED-MOTORC...=item5d29c06be2&vxp=mtr&_uhb=1#ht_6636wt_1163
I've installed a few before, and will be installing a set for a friend tomorrow in fact :)

They work good and are crazy bright, plus you can buy extra LED pods and wire them up to the same controller.

If you wanted to stay pretty legal I'd go with white or amber.

Jamie, would you recommend any LED package (not remote) that I could hook through my brake light? Wanted to put some red LEDs inside my fairings that would turn on when I'm braking. I'm always worried about how to hook them up and if I need resistors, etc.

I have blue on mine and have yet to be stopped by police. (I asked a RIDE program if they were illegal and they said no because they werent casting light forwards, 2 other cops have said they looked nice and noticed me from far away, Can be good and bad depending on how you are driving)

I got mine from www.ledglow.com , seem to be the same remote as your link but I have the LED strips.

Word of advice on the install, make sure they are all hidden so you can only see the light and not the actual LED pod or strip.

Awesome awesome! Yeah I'm looking at a few vendors and ledglow was shortlisted.

What's the advantage of strips vs pods?

Pods have less LED's and more concentrated and can fit in tight spots where strips come from 4" to 12", so the 12" ones are hard to find a place they will fit and not be seen.

The pods in your link have 84 LED's over 14 pods where as mine have over 200 on 10 strips.

It all comes down to placement to get the best light out of them.

All the waterproof sticky back LED strips you buy at pacific mall are 12v. You can wire them directly to your brake light wires and they'll work like how you describe. No fuses, relays, anything required. Just tap your brake light wires and possibly add some extra wire to run to all the LED strips you wire up.

If in the future you decide that you might want to park and leave them turned on for show, you could wire in an "ON-OFF-ON" switch, so one way is "with brakes", middle is "disabled/off" and the other way is "constant on" even when the key is off. You'd need the ON-OFF-ON switch, inline fuse/holder and a ring terminal or two for the battery bolts. If you need help with the install and don't mind the trek out to whitby we can do em here.

@jeffjones - Is this what you got? http://www.motorcycleledlights.com/Blue-Motorcycle-LED-Lights-10pc.aspx

How and where would you hide the control box? They're apparently NOT waterproof. Cling wrap? Zip Lock?

For context - I have a 2003 V Star 1100 Custom which I'm going to light up

That's the exact kit I have.
I have my controller under my passenger seat with my alarm so not much water gets in there, I also ziptied it to the subframe so if water gets in there it should run underneath it.
That kit is all plug and play as well.

Also if you ask him on facebook he will give you a coupon code for most likely 10% off. (Not much but it is something, also tell him you will send pics of the finished product and he might give you more?)

Oh thanks! Thats really nice to know (about the discounts).

It's good that the kit is all plug and play. I'm not good at this kinda stuff so I have to do extra research before investing in something like this.

Do post a pic of your ride or PM it to me with the lights on. I'd love to see an actual finished product and not some advertised pic online.

I don't cast any blue light forwards which keeps it legal.

Its hard to get a good pic with my phone but here are the best I could get.

I taped some clear ones into my single lights and stuck then on the back tail. I have the IT tail light so I wanted to add a little extra just to make drivers notice me a bit better theyre bright as hell picked them up at Walmart. Does it matter thy theyre clear for rear singles? Will I get hassled by the cops or no?

Thanks Jamie. I'm still going to look for a 12V regulator though if I can..not sure how the current brake lights modulate voltage fluctuations but they must somehow right? Do I only need a regulator if I'm connecting directly to the battery?

I bought a couple red, 12V waterproof LED strips from dx.com, hopefully will ship in the next few weeks and I can play around with them.

Just the strips with no controller are just current limited with a resistors built into the strip. Your 12V ones can handle a certain amount of overvoltage and they will dim/brighten with voltage changes, but it's not all that noticeable. Just hook them up as is. If you don't like how they work then think about putting in regulator.

You can get whole rolls from E-Bay that can be cut to length and just solder on a connector.
