Anyone in their late 20's insuring 1000 class bikes these days?

Going on seven years riding (seven years insured as well) and currently have an inline 4 600 and getting close to wanting to move up.

Seems like finding a 1000cc bike that a company will actually touch is going to be fun. Already inquired about a Yamaha FZ1 and my current company does not insure it, and the only one that did through my broker was $$$$$. I don't mind a rate increase of course but for 6 months of riding there is a point where its silly.

Going into this search I got the feeling I am probably still too young for a rate even close to reasonable on a bike with 150+hp but was wondering what others experiences are around my age. Does anything in the 1000 class (likely going naked bike) fly under the radar a bit insurance wise?

Currently insured by Echelon but willing to move anywhere.

Looking for any advice... thanks

Cruiser work? That is probably the only reasonable 1000 cc+ insurance (but less hp than your 600).

Sometimes euro bikes (Aprilia, MV, etc) get better rates as they are less likely to be bought and crashed by the noobs.

Another option is to switch up the ride but stay in a smaller class (eg. 800cc v-twin, v-4 or triple). It will feel completely different from your current ride and may not be so brutal on insurance.

Motorcycle insurance is less predictable then the stock market. If you are looking for logic in the way your premiums are calculated, you are never going to find it. If you really want to get depressed calculate your insurance cost per kilometre on each vehicle you own right now.

Better yet, sit in front of the fireplace and burn all your old insurance receipts one at a time and try to keep count of the total in your head. :| you will give that mission up real quick once the cost exceeds what you could ever believe possible.

I like the 1000cc class bikes for the low end torque but insurance is stupid on them. Like @GreyGhost mentioned consider 800cc class bikes. They seem to hit a sweet spot between high rev power of 600cc and bottom end of 1000cc.

I'm insured 3 years so less than you but insurance has been very reasonable for me on both the 800cc bikes I've had.

Maybe look at the Z900....948cc pretty much a litre bike engine but fairly reasonable insurance rate.

6+ years with full M and no tickets/claims you'll qualify for elite rider discount with Wawanesa. I know a few guys in 20s with super sports under them.

Try a Sport Tourer. I'm a bit older but for me my FJR costs about $900 this year, that's about 30% less than what I paid last year for a GSXR1300 (same displacement). FJR, Connie, SuperDuke... they should be a lot less than a 1000SS.

One of my riding buddies had an 01 cbr929 fire blade and I think he was around $270/mo in his late 20s. He bought a zx10r this year and it went up quite a bit. The 929 was a great bike with more power than you’ll use on the street. Worth looking into.

If Wawanesa considers a motorcycle to be a sport bike (and they do so for all naked bikes), they won't even touch one over 1000 cc, doesn't matter what license you have, how many years you insured, etc. I was with Wawanesa for several years. Last bike was Ducati Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak. Got a great rate on it. But when I bought KTM 1290 SDR (same applies to Aprilia Tuono V4 1100), Wawanesa said they won't insure this bike no matter what.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the answers. I have all winter to figure it out but hoping to start next season with a 1000. ;)

Thats what I have now, FZ6, thats why I checked the quote on the FZ1 first. Would love a superduke.

Cruiser definitely does not work. :) :) :)

Call td or mitchell and whale. The fz1 should be cheap to insure.

You mentioned 1000cc, but that includes a LOT of bikes

What kind of riding do you like to do? What are you looking for in a bike?

High horsepower numbers on a spec sheet paper mean very little imo,
what kind of 1000cc are you looking for?

My previous fz6 made almost 100 hp, but I enjoyed the torque and the character of the sv650 way more(70 hp)

You mentioned a liter naked that flies under the radar? The MT-10 does that, out of all the supernakeds, I was quoted the least for that one

perhaps try something different? There are so many different kinds of bikes out there, with so many different engine types, you have an inline 4, maybe try the yamaha triple? (mt 09)...I test rode an xsr900 recently, and realized how amazing that bike is...and remembered why I bought the fz09 a few years ago

The suspension isnt great, and it doesnt corner telepathic like my superduke does, it also lacks a lot of electronic gadgets, but if I was on a budget, and just wanted an amazing bike, my god, its hard to beat the bang for the buck

Find out what you want in a bike, and it will be easier to narrow it down, maybe a ducati V twin, maybe a Bmw boxer, maybe a yamaha triple
you might be able to get a test ride or 2 from a dealer

I rode the 821 ducati and it hits wayy harder than the fz6 did, at non license losing speeds, and everyday rpms

I personally am not a huge fan of inline 4's

You're not wrong, engine characteristics make a similar cc feel very different from another. I've ridden a MT09 plenty, lots of torque but I don't feel its enough of a next step for me from the FZ6 top end power wise. I'm not picky, I just want more power everywhere and the 1000 ish series brings that. While the 600-750 level its a bit more work to get into the power.

I know what you mean the high torque bikes vs the winding out to get to the power i4's, I like both. I don't mind needing to be above 8k rpm for all the power of an I4 but as a city bike an engine that makes lots of torque/power down low is great. Even an MT07 is stupid fun as a city bike. Torque and power wheelies for days.

I find the SV650 super boring. I like my FZ6 a lot more to wind out. I find the SV650 very underpowered and I'm glad I got to ride on one a demo day because it was certainly not for me. I was much happier with my FZ6 overall.

It really just comes down to insurance, seems like thats what dictates my buying decision since I started riding. I'll definitely get a quote on an MT10.

Your current bike is my dream machine by the way, I mentioned it earlier but I absolutely love the superduke 1290

it is many things, but understated it is not ?

big bright orange and insurance isnt what I would call cheap

redlines at like 10.5 though

Can I ask what you pay for the insurance? I was curious when I first saw your post about buying it

My 2005 FZ1 is 695/year. Desjardins is raising me to 801 in December. I think the most I ever paid was around 120/mo 10 years ago. I'm 44. I have a clean record and a multiline discount.
