Anyone here a cyclist?

Mark Cavendish…again

I know all the other top sprinters are out, and that he has the most finely tuned lead out train in years, but what he’s doing is absolutely incredible. Career rescued from the scrap heap, last minute call to the tour and now this?! Absolutely loving it.

But that lead out train, good god. Couldn’t be more textbook.

(gonna be a painful weekend for him)

Just to illustrate how bizarre things can get between cyclists & motorists, here's one that happened last year in the Vegas area where the cyclists only mistake was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
At least in this case, Karma was instant!

Cops handing out $125 tickets to cyclists exceeding 20 km/h in high park

Good.

"I thought it was quite a poor use of resources to be ticketing cyclists who have no way of knowing how fast they're going."

Speedos are $30 and every bike shop sells them. Doesn't go well with the hipster single speed bike look but too bad.

Also. All road users got hit. As they deserve it they are all vehicles.

On Monday and Tuesday, officers handed 126 tickets to drivers and cyclists for speeding or failing to pause at stop signs.

Good.

Soooooo by that logic, everybody going 10-15 over should get ticketed in their cars/on motorcycles?! Cause that would be 90% of cars on the roads.

Kinda hypocritical if you ask me. Heck if its setup at the bottom of a hill, even if my car was on freaking cruise control i'd probably get a ticket.

My current car will drop a gear if cruise is on and speed increases by 5 kph over setpoint. I don't think more than one gear though so you can still get 20 over.

I can say the cyclist I had the displeasure of having an encounter with on Saturday didn't paint bikers with a good light.

Crawling stop and go traffic downtown Burlington just coming into the downtown I had about a 5 or 6 foot gap to the car in front of me and from my left side (turning lane) a cyclist cuts right, in front of my truck and then carries on quickly against the curb past all of the cars in front of me. about 5 seconds later I see his friend coming up the left side of me as well so I hit my gas to close the gap to the car in front of me as I knew he was going to pull same stunt. Blew on my horn as he was in front of my windshield in between the now 3 foot gap to the car in front and just about lost control and stopped so we could both yell out "F-U" to each other a couple of times and then carried on riding his bike along the curb (no bike lane)

My only regret is not making a smaller gap to the car in front of me faster to make him crash so he could explain to the police his complete disregard of traffic laws.
Shi+ like that no longer aggravates me. Why should I get worked up about his death-wish?

I used to blame cyclists, now I blame police. The simply can’t be bothered with cyclists.

I get that there’s small percent of cyclists that act like complete jackasses, same thing with motorcyclists. But the actual impact to you in this case was what?…
Thing is it’s not a small percentage for cyclists, it’s more likely the majority. In my neighborhood I rarely see a cyclist stop or signal. I see stupid **** all day long, in fact I’d say a very small minority obey stop signs, traffic signals and fewer use hand signals.

I cycle with my wife occasionally, the group thinks I’m goofing with them when I signal and stop 100% of the time. They also hate my champion shorts, Reebok tee, the fact I call my setup clip less (I have no clips), and that I don’t wear a lid.

I am goofing with them.

A $125 speedo is 25 over… you gotta know you’re running fast, speedometer or not.

We’re also talking about a 20km zone through a park.

This story makes me smile!

I will hit 40km/h, without pedaling on my beater, steel single speed on a hill...the girl in the pic of the article has a freaking basket on her bike ffs. Listen, i get it for the guys that are willfully pedaling through the hill trying to hit a top speed record, but for the casual person having a leisurely ride on a sunday that's just letting gravity do its thing...it's kinda douchey from the cops.

From what i can see, the spot they chose is a street within the park, with a bike lane next to it. Ah and theyre blocking the sidewalk for pedestrians. Now i can guarantee you that at least half the cars that drive through there drive faster than most of the cyclists that were stopped there but i guess that doesn't matter. The cyclists are out to kill us!

They ran a dragnet. Anything rolling thru at 20 over got nabbed, not just bicycles.

I doubt gravity will stand up as a defence for a leisurely ride at 45kmh in a park.

Where are people getting 20 over? I see speed limit of 20 and set fine of 125. Who says that 21 km/h wasn't getting the ticket?

Fines for speeding are about 125 at 20 over - that was a guess on my part.

perhaps they were charged with speeding in a community safe zone, $128.

Compliance to the law is well the will of civilized society.

If cyclists, riders or drivers don't want to comply. Perhaps they should stick to walking.

Sure, run a speed trap.

But if you want to catch the people truly trying to be a$sh0les, run it where people actually have to be putting in an active effort to be breaking the law.

To me this blitz is akin to clocking people 50m past a 40km/h sign that switched from a 50 zone. It's not in good faith.

Definitely, but how many laws do you see broken every day in those vehicles. Heck even pedestrians break the law. Police officers break the law.

So if you saw people murdering others every day it's okay for you to do the same?
Well that escalated quickly.

If laws were black or white, we'd all be criminals.

I just think that people with criminal intentions should be given more "attention" than people going 10km/h over. Like if you were to prioritize what crimes should get more attention, i think murder should be a couple notches higher than buddy in lycra going 10-15km/h. He more of a nuisance than an actual criminal.

As an example, theft has gone up by a ridiculous amount during covid, maybe focus more on that?!

So if you saw people murdering others every day it's okay for you to do the same?
Hahahahhahahahahahhahahhahah
Are you actually comparing bikes over a speed limit to murder??
Ahahahahahahahaha!!!

the fact is, high park has very wide roads and for most of it pedestrians are not close to the road. And during the week, and this year on weekends cause it’s closed to cars, the ring road is low traffic. And you simply can’t compare a bike at 25 km/hr to a car at 20 km/hr in that situation. The kinetic energy difference is orders or magnitude higher on the car.

And yes, the law is the law but if people want to post ridiculous crap that all laws are equal and this is right up there with murder then it’s pointless even having a discussion. But these are people that think they are the arbitrary judge that defines the line of what laws can be bent where it suits them vs the laws that are absolute and must be strictly followed otherwise they will get really annoyed and give you the frowning of a lifetime.

guess what? You’re not that line. And if you think you are you’re drowning in hypocrisy.

and back to the original discussion, setting up a dragnet to ticket cyclists in high park is a comical misuse of woefully underfunded local resources for traffic enforcement and safety.
