Anyone buy a bike from Calgary ??

Anyone here ever had the experience of buying and bringing a bike from Calgary to Ontario ??
Things I'm concerned about...
What if the bike is stolen or something?
What kinda taxes will i be looking at if any when plating it in Ontario?
Rough transportation cost ??

**yes i saw a bike for sale in Calgary that I'm interested in.

The bigger issue is will it pass safety in ontario

Look at the $ value. Is it really worth it? It's a bike. Why the headache? If you were talking about a $60K car, there may be something to save, but a bike?

Is it so super rare that it can't be found in Ontario? Are you confident in the title history enough to be satisfied that it has never been branded(salvage/rebuilt bikes are not allowed to be plated in Ontario)? It's high enough risk to buy a bike you haven't seen, add shipping and transfer headaches into the mix. I probably wouldn't buy a bike out of province period, unless it was both something that absolutely cannot be bought here, AND a freakishly good deal. However if the deal was that good, I would probably be too worried that it might be junk.

It is a good deal, nice bike too but I'm also thinking the same thing... is it worth it ?? but what if it is a clean bike with a great deal .. i know even after transportation it will be worth it.

Yes, quite a big difference in price. Which worries me more :D ... You're right about the title thing too.

Is it a good enough deal to justify driving there? Shipping would probably be comparable to your fuel and trailer rental,if not more.

Buy it and just store it there, riding is much better, make a trip down every summer and enjoy some great roads, ride it back someday. Only bike I saw there that isn't available here that I looked into, a dealer had was the new Honda Monkeys

Used USHIP to have an enduro shipped out here from Alberta. I had a friend in Alberta look at it for me. The seller wrote me a tax receipt for a $1000. So MTO costs here were $130 plus the plates and a safety. The deal went smoothly. I wouldn't do it without having someone in Alberta look at it tho.

The guy formerly known as Mladin.

There was a guy here a year or three back who bought a bike from out west, got it home, and then found it it had been branded as "rebuilt". I believe it was from Alberta, too.

This is, as was mentioned in an earlier response, fine and dandy in AB and several other provinces.. In Ontario, it's not. You cannot plate any bike which has been branded rebuilt elsewhere.

I'll see if I can dig up the thread. The guy ended up with basically a useless bike that he was going to have to try to resell back out west somewhere again.

Anyhow, you'd want to be VERY VERY VERY careful you're not going down the same road.

Can you pull a title history from their ministry online? Like you would do a UVIP here? That's step one. I still say it has to be worth driving there. Say you go to the expense of going out there and it's a dud, you walk away and you're only out travel. But if you buy it remotely and ship it, if it sucks you're out a bunch more.

Found the thread I mentioned above. It was from Manitoba. Same issue.

I do not actually mind driving out to buy a bike, done it a few times from around Montreal area but that was way short of a drive than this. I'm more than likely going to pass it given the current lockdown situation.
Believe it or not but i have actually sold a bike from here to some guy from Quebec, who sent his driver with a payorder. Didn't even start the bike, all he asked on the phone was if the bike is "ok". I was scared for the receiveng $$ part, but in the end it cleared and he got a really nice bike too :D

You came very, very close to getting scammed. This is one of the oldest plays in the book - "I'll send a driver to pick it up and he will have a money order for you". Then the money order ends up being fake. And your bike is already in pieces in a chop shop and the parts headed underground. Seems like you lucked out and found the one guy on the face of the planet still doing this sort of thing above board.

I would NEVER deal anything less than in person, and preferably for amounts under $5K, in cash. Increasingly even bank drafts and certified cheques have been known to be forged - if it's a big dollar value and one of those come into play, at least dealing with the buyer in person (and getting some personal info along the way, a cellphone number, a licence plate on the car they show up in, etc) as well as just sitting and talking with them over the deal can give you a good gut feeling if they're a slimeball or not.

When I sold my VTX a few months back I actually had a guy attempt the "I'll send a truck, the guy will have the payment" routine on a 3 month old Kijiji account. I replied that I only deal in person. Never heard from him again. Almost certainly a scam avoided.

I sold one to a guy from QC but it was a $750 cash from the transport driver when he picked it up. Not a big problem. Now some Ontario kijiji ads related to this topic. First one a Texas rebuilt title, Second I'm still talking to. Think I can fix it as it's not branded.

Why does it need a new vin if it's not branded? Sketchy AF.

I've seen new bikes out west for a lot cheaper then in Ontario. If I were in the market (possibly a K1600GT) in the future I'd consider buying over the phone from a dealer in Calgary and having the bike shipped to my driveway. I see little downside if buying new.

If you're seriously looking for cheap toys right now the southern USA is worth looking at once the border reopens. A, there's lots more of them in the warmer southern states, so prices are typically lower. And B, with desperation to pay the bills setting in in the weeks and months ahead there will be some fire sale prices. Even with the exchange there may be deals to be had.

I bought our Jetskis in Michigan a year or so after the 2008 crash. Even with the exchange I saved a TON of money.

I agree on the US idea, and with some recent research I found that anything that is approved for sale in the US, is legal for import to Canada. SO if there's something new that you like, that can't be bought here, go nuts. You'll just have to pay cash, and tax, and some other minor import fees(and read the small numbers on the speedo).

I think the economy in the south may be a bit stronger than closer states like NY, MI, IL etc right now though. Some southern state economies have been a bit more open than many others.
