Anyone been to Rome?

If you fly into/out of Rome and have to make your own transfers to the cruise terminal, book a downtown hotel (there are 400) near the Union station. the trains/subway/taxis converge and it really is the middle of where to be. The old part of Rome is not that big a footprint (gotta remember they built the place when everybody walked to get around) , you go to Rome for the history and sights, you can party anywhere, but buildings on the scale of the Vatican and Colluseum are found nowhere else. Red house wine and bottles water are the same price, never make that mistake twice.
Public toilets (specially free ones) are very rare in Italy, you can use one at a cafe but buy a coffee or juice or they will chase you down the sidewalk. Take Imodium with you.

On the sail down from Rome to Messina you'll have to sail through the Aeolian Islands, just north of that you pass the active volcano Stromboli, have your camera ready the spark and smoke show can be pretty cool, the channel entering Messina has an amazing tower set where they connected the Island to Calabria , its amazing engineering. Go look at the Norman cathedral paid for by Richard the Lionheart on his way home from the crusades in Messina and if you get the chance do not miss Taormina a village with Greek! ruins founded by the greeks 6bc just outside Messina, Mt Etna is pretty interesting if you like hiking on active (hot) volcanos (dont wear sandals). Every area of Italy has there own cuisine specialties (15 varieties of Mozarella) so be adventurous , food is very important in the culture.

When you get to Greece, order a Greek salad, it sounds stupid but it will look nothing like a greek salad you get here and its awesome, the feta is amazing, get a spot on any patio and get calamari, you'll swoon, its that good. Greece may be my favorite place in the Med, really good beer is a buck, good red wine is a buck a glass and they really are pretty nice people.

The shore excursions only look expensive upfront, if you figure out land transport costs, the fact they have checked out equipment/quality of guides and if your on a cruise booked sidetrip the boat does not leave without you. Thats worth something.

Enjoy my favorite activity, get a good spot on the rail of the ship and watch idiots that cant tell time run down the pier screaming as the ship gets ready to pull away.

You'll come home planning a return to Crete, out of your itinerary that may be the most beautiful spot. IMHO...

When I went a few years ago I stayed here HOTEL BUONARROTI Via Carlo Alberto, 43 00185 Rome Italy and if I remember right it's pretty cheap too 50euros a night. It's close to the train station but within walking distance to everything, even walked to the vatican from there.

Many years ago when I was a student I did Rome in a day...managed to see all the sights...get pickpocketed..catch the thieves...get our money back then catch a train late at night out of the city. The colliseum was fantastic and the Vatican was fine but to be honest I might be one of the few people that hates Italy. I got fed up with rude people everywhere and was happy to get to other countries that were more friendly. I stayed in a castle in one place too (Tuscany) a few years back and while that was great...the smiling thief of a cab driver that took me to the airport left a bad taste. So in short...Italy can go **** itself. There's plenty of other places that are happy to see tourists and treat them properly and are just as pretty/interesting and cheaper.

jc100, i'd have to agree on Rome and while Italy is not my favorite southern european country, there are things to see there that cant be seen anywhere else. Its why I would encourage everybody to see it at least once in thier lives if possible. Like Venice, I dont need to hurry back, but anywhere south of Rome, North of Pisa or East of Milan and I'm in the car, the places are amazing, food spectacular, and people not as mean spirited as the Romans

Hire a taxi or limo driver for a day as your tour guide. You'll cover a lot more ground and see more sights than on the bus tours. If you tour the Vatican City, remember to dress appropriately.

If I had the choice I'd rather be in Greece or Turkey...or anywhere in France actually. I agree, something to see once at least though plus...even with the bad experiences the food in Italy was amazing.

I agree, I spent 3 days in Roma, I hated roman, I hated roman food, known to be super expensive and still be hungry after, but its good (so far, the best Italian restaurant I tried was in Spain...). Do not drive in this city, you'll kill yourself, unless you can drive at 130km/h down younge street downtown toronto and using the sidewalk to pass other car, don't drive in Roma!! I saw this...my taxi driver did this! Other, 1 day isn't enough, you'll need at least 1 week.

As an Italian descent, I am quite comfortable in Italy, but can appreciate why non-Italian descents would not like the people there.

Like most places though, when you get out of the tourist trap areas, the people are quite nice.

I like spending time in Sicily. It's poorer, but the people are nice, the beaches are great, and the food is very good (typical Southern Italian cuisine, but that's what I grew up on).
