I don't have numbers but know someone in the USA that lost their job and now drives for both Uber and Lyft to bring in some cash. He's making half what he used to. There's a taxi / Uber thread here that gives a lot of opinions on things like insurance etc.

IMO it doesn't sound like a career thing but would may benefit a short term situation such as:

You're living on strike pay and want to make a few $$ on the side.
Student needing to work but needs flexibility
Retiree needing to get out of the house

My main concern is the insurance issue. They're working on it but make sure you don't end up liable for a major crash.

My second concern would be the operating cost of the vehicle which the government says is about $0.50 per Km. If you don't cover mileage depreciation and put on significant miles you could end up losing thousands of dollars of value when you trade in for a new cage.

Driving people around isn't what it used to be.

Arent they supposed to cover you as soon as a passenger step into your car?

Seems to be a lot of mixed information about that, Uber says they insure you, those who've actually needed the insurance say it wasn't exactly there after the fact.

One thing is for sure, if you drive for Uber under a standard non-commercial auto insurance policy, if your insurance company finds out they will cancel you for material misrepresentation on the spot...and then the only insurance you'll get will be facility at $$$$$$$.

As soon as they mandate insurance in Ontario that will be the kiss of death :)

Anybody care to speculate? I would bet it will at least double your insurance premiums

Taxi companies pay it and still manage to make a profit...and they're paying full commercial rates for a 100% commercial vehicle and fleet drivers.

I remember reading the intended Aviva rate structure somewhere and IIRC it was actually quite reasonable for Uber drivers operating up to 20 hours per week or something like that. A mixed use personal/commercial setup is bound to be less expensive that straight commercial.

I'm using my car occasionally for doing service calls and added coverage. It was about a 30% adder for a maximum of 4000 Kms per year.

Carrying passengers may be more but a person driving their own car might be more careful than the usual cabbie.

I am waiting for an enterprising sole to operate a fleet of uber vehicles that follow surge pricing around (eg. Events such as All Star games, Olympics etc.). Surge pricing seems to be the magic to make money as an uber driver. Based on some of the prices quoted, you can probably make more new years Eve than in a normal month, add the insurance, work one night and cancel the next day.

But why an enterprising fish?

Posting ten minutes awake is something I do or sounds like rapid fire online funerals. Please, from one friend to another I implore you, do not make that a lifestyle. You have no idea the shame and self loathing associated with that.

What would happen if you rented a car for the surge days? It's not your car so not your insurance worry. It wouldn't work out financially at normal rates.

As I understand it the driver submission process involves some vetting specifically related to the details of your own personal vehicle, so I'm not sure you could rent a vehicle in the morning, submit the details, and then get approved same day. If they'd even accept a rental presuming they want copies of the ownership etc.

I could be off base here but I do remember reading that you have to meet standards and there is a basic vetting process.

The lack of information alone should be enough if a warning about what working for Uber would be like. If they're not forthcoming and transparent, you might as well work for the mafia.
