Any trades workers here?

My welding buddy yesterday was doing beam repairs on a pedestrian bridge on Toronto Island , welding overhead worki ng from a small barge. Under a helmet and leather jacket , welding overhead , yesterday. Earned every buck yesterday.

A mate back home was a welder and built 800+hp Formula Offroad buggies... he couldn't keep up with demand 20 yrs ago, each month he was sending a container with 2 at $120k each to Saudi Arabia.

Talk to an accountant. I suspect it has to be a corporation to spread the income over time. As a sole-proprietor, you could keep a separate account to isolate the money but government wants some tax this year and I don't know how to do that as a sole proprietor. If you went the sole proprietor route, I would probably be quite poor at running the business and have a lot of expenses for vehicle, phone, internet, gas, etc so the business might not be that profitable.
One of the great benefits of a very small business operating as a sole proprietorship is the tax savings. It's fairly typical for small business owners to write off the usual stuff -- a work truck and all it's expenses, Internet, cell phones (for you and your family), a portion of your house expenses (used as home office after hours and to meet suppliers & clients), a portion of your meals, travel expenses. If you have kids, distribute some of the business income by paying them a salary/wages.

I should have added wink wink nudge nudge to my post.

I'm surprised at the folks that have never run/ owned a business . large , small , or lemonaide stand that talk about the "write offs" , there are a lot of perks to being owner, but its not the free for all some believe.
There is as rediculous amount of paperwork to support many businesses , and Lord help you if your in any business with regulatory oversights.
nudged , nudge , wink wink

The window cleaner guys are nutty. There is a fancy hoist for them but they dont trust it and use a piece of carpet instead like they always have.View attachment 55365View attachment 55366
Not to defend window cleaners (I used to work on swing stages, and the number you'd see with the leg straps undone on their harnesses was shocking), but in that case, there's three good reasons: First, the davit arm is designed for stages, so will be out away from the building, while the window cleaners will want to be right up against the glass. Second, the window cleaners need to cover the whole building off a bosun's chair doing as few drops as possible, so they need to swing. It's unlikely the davit arms are lined up in the best spots. Third, the bosun's chair operates off a rope, not a cable, which is what is designed to be fastened to the end of that arm...

I built that . . . well, some of it.

Edit: I should have gone and checked if the mechanicals have shifted any of the ceilings, while gaining access before I put my name on it, but I'm guessing most won't know where it is anyways. :)

Expensive real estate plus geographical and seismic limits on height mean architects have licence to go nuts...

The tunnelling jobs in Toronto pay $46.

I had a job offer at Muskrat falls before and they offered me 75k as a FIFO…I laughed and I laughed.

5k/week? I think the math is off there somewhere. Foremen in the tunnels were pulling 2.5-3k/week clear.

I should’ve joined the union not engineering.

3k clear is 5 before tax. give or take. All trades need workers at the moment. Good time to be a tradesman.

Depending on the shifts and rotation definitely a good gig.

Also need to ensure who pays for flights and if it’s 2 on and 2 off….it’s 5k/month.

Company should def be paying for all expenses to and from the site.

You can make 75k as a flag person in Toronto with 0 education or expenses. Pension too. Got to love 183.
