Any tips on how to dress for colder weather riding?

Quick tips: If you are caught without your cold weather gear you can still stay warm.I always carry a pair of latex gloves in a pocket to wear under my gloves.(makes a huge difference) And you can buy a newspaper and put it over your chest, inside your jacket to keep warm.

Another great thing: at every red light reach down and molest your engine (if your bike is naked-half faired. if you have full fairings, toughluck!)

Agreed. just watch where you actually put your hands. I grabbed a fist full of exhaust pipe once, and cooked my gloves! Some of the leather from the gloves actually melted onto the pipe.

Yeah, I do this too. (Gloves on engine cases.)
My rads are at each side of the bike. When I pull over for gas, I put each glove on top of a rad, and when I'm done fueling, my gloves are toasty warm.

Thermal wear or long-johns are only moderately effective; but much better are wool-blend cross country ski socks that go over the top of the knee.

I usually just wear thin cold weather running gear under my riding gear (textile jacket with rain liner in, kevlar lined jeans) and it works good down to about 4 degrees. I thing I have for my neck I bought a royal d awhile ago and it sucks, need to find something better..

Textile jackets are made to let the wind go through them so that you are cooler during very hot weather?

I wish that were true! Then I could've saved a few hundred bucks on a mesh jacket.

Most of the durable textile motorcycle gear that is non-mesh is high-denier (high-thread-count) nylon. At least the stuff I have is thick and heavy, and came from the factory with a durable water-repellent coating that's... somewhat effective. In the pants and jacket I have, I can ride in a t-shirt and without pants underneath, on the highway, down to about 8C.

I'm sure that gore-tex, rainwear or specialty cold weather gear (like the Klim stuff) would be better but I have layered under my Joe Rocket ballistic gear and been OK down to -2. I wouldn't really want to be out in much colder weather.

I wear regular street clothes under an oversized 1pc with a ski jacket on top. Neck protection in the form of a turtleneck or neck guard similar to previously posted and sometimes a balaclava and a bandanna. Two layers of socks in one size bigger boots and surgical gloves under wind proof gloves. Heated grips and wind deflectors on my fairings gets me to about -10C. Colder than that and I'll add my cheapo sled pants.

Honestly, thermal gear - it's warmer, thinner (and thus more comfortable) and wicks away sweat...what more could you want?

Boots with the vents closed and normal socks works for me..I don't care much about my legs getting cold, and a windbreaker under my textile is enough to block most of the wind/cold out. Windbreaker has a hood on it and I'll wear a bandana for the throat if its really cold. The only problem I have is my knuckles because I only have summer shorty gloves (doesn't cover the wrist either). I just either stick my left hand by the engine or squish it between my tank bag and my stomach. Looks like I'm fapping while riding though.

I have a Rev'It Sand suit that I wear for riding below 10 degrees. My bike has heated grips and hand guards to deflect a bit of wind but the outside of my hands still get cold when the temp drops. I have a pair of Alpinestars GoreTex cold weather gloves but they just don't have the same feel and control of non insulated gloves. I've looked everywhere for gloves that provide insulation on the back of the hands with a regular motorcycle glove palm which allows the heat from the grips through as well as providing normal summertime feel of the controls. Any suggestions?

I do the following
put the liner in jacket and pants
wear long john underwear
slip on a "dickie"before donning a wool sweater ( a dickie is handknitted neck warmer similar to what macdoc has shown that's popular with snowmobilers)
the above is good down to about 5C.
Below that I install handlebar muffs (with home made front brake guard), wear my electric vest under my sweater and put the visor back on my helmet, then I'm good to 0.

Last winter i wore long johns and a neck warmer, also put in my jacket liner and it was enough...

My jacket was a textile one also...

have your gloves go over your jacket sleeves and you should be good...

also bear in mind that your tires don't stick as good in the cold weather...

Well, kind of.
