Any rules for choosing a number?

Hello, now that I have a complete set of race bodywork on order, I started thinking about painting it, decals, etc.. One thing I can't figure out is how people choose the number they put on their bike.

Certainly, everyone has a particular number of personal significance they'd like to place, but are there any rules about that? While I don't plan to race for now (just trackdays next season), aspirations to slowly enter the world of racing could come later, so I'd rather plan for the future..

So, can I put any number I want or what?

You can choose any number and any colour you want. However certain colours signify certain things. Black, I think is pro racer etc etc. Others on here will know for sure. Also if you choose #46 you'd better be quick.

I bought track bodywork from a guy in the US with silver/black numbers. Apparently they're used by a race series down there.

Also if you plan to race then you should consult the rules for that particular series ie if you're gonna race SOAR read their rules and be guided by that.

If your planning on racing you need to contact the org that your going to race with and choose a number IF its available then you can purchase a license and secure the number.
If you are just doing trackdays then pick whatever you want and whatever colour you want.
Racing:
Expert or Pro - Canada: Black on white US: Black on White
Novice or Am - Canada: Red on white US: Black on Yellow

Thanks everyone, didn't know all this! I guess it will be the whatever number I want for now then..

If you plan on doing any Pro 6 trackdays they ask that you have a number on the bike. If your number is the same as someone who has been registered with them previously, they will ask you to put an "X" before or after your number or change your number.

Good to know, thanks. Well, I'm putting a 3 digit number, somebody shows up with the same number would be quite a coincidence lol.... And now ladies and gentlemen, the number is......the drums are building up......... :

I thought I was clever too by chosing a 3 digit number. The first year I was told I may need the X but buddy never showed back up. Since then its someone elses problem as I have #420 to myself!

I'll put #359 in red from the very beginning. The only thing I wonder is if it is red on light silver, would it be OK if one day I want to take up with racing, or it MUST be on white?

doesn't have to be on a number plate. lots of guys just have numbers on the regular paint. it's a good idea to do a white outline on the numbers though if you're going to do it that way l. i didn't have a number plate on my first race bike.

Red on WHITE is what it says in the rule book.

If timing and scoring has a problem seeing your number, you might not get scored. If your number is not in accordance with the rule book, if you file a protest because you didn't get scored then the protest will get thrown out on the grounds that your number is not in accordance with the rule book. If your number is in accordance with the rule book, then you have a case. That's the fundamental guideline - timing and scoring has to be able to see the number.

Funky scripts and fonts can cause a problem for timing and scoring, too. IMO this is not the place to get fancy. Use a simple, readable font, and make the numbers as big as you can, red and white (for amateur) with the white border at least 1" wide around each number.

I have been at Sunday morning rider's meetings which contained "The following riders must fix their number plates so that timing and scoring can read them, or else they're not going to get scored this afternoon ..." so it does happen.

I don't know if he's planning on racing? For just trackdays the numbers are really whatever you want them to be but they do help photographers.

But yes, I was one of only a few riders at SOAR who use a belly pan number as well.

the lowest available numbers at pro6 wihout an x are in the 800s. If you make a rider profile on their website you can pick a number.

How corny are race numbers on a track bike?
Should I just slap on some numbers trackside if an organizer requires it or go full out with a white number plate and red numbers?
I feel corny as **** putting numbers on a track only bike.

I don't think it's lame...it's a track bike, have a little fun with it

Not silly at all, you may decide to race some day and your numbers will already be done.

Its 20 bucks, you over thinking it

I got my 601 for both, SOAR and Pro 6
