Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

My relatives Sante fe is on the shop for a new engine. My former banker who is manager for a Hyundai dealer now says his shop is full of vehicles waiting for new engines

Have fun with all that Apple...

So the Apple cars would all end up needing new engines, too?

I will still predict that the apple car will take a few years and generations to gain traction and relevance.

I'm certain they are kicking themselves for shelving their earlier project and not sticking to a full in house design a la Tesla

They are way too far behind, they are piggy backing another manufacturer.

The iPhone fan Boys will be happy and surely buy one, but I'm not sure the public will be as convinced.

Time will tell.

Sorry to break it. But Tesla is so far ahead in this field that it's not even funny.

They could throw CANBUS out the window, engineer some new method tied to the car. Like every module is tied to VIN + secret phase. Then do voodoo to make it obd2 and regulation happy.

One module busted, that will be whatever we charge since NOBODY will be able to reprogram a used one.

You want to develop after market accessories? Pucker up for a apple developer account, their intense apple store like policies and be prepared for a new mac something very 2 years...

Wonder if this will be like the Covid19 factory shutdown where the government agency says "Do this, it's the law" and Musk just thumbs his nose and says "screw you" more or less.

In related news, this is one downside of stuffing all your eggs into one basket. Instead of having good old fashioned independent controls for things like HVAC and windshield wipers (anyone remember that Tesla story?) when you move pretty much every single feature and function onto a single touch screen, well, when that screen goes on the fritz, suddenly all those features, some of which are safety critical...stop working.

Bumpers and roof still attached to my Volt. Just checking in.

Even with existing canbus networks ... lots of cars already have control modules that are coded to the VIN. No VIN match, no workie. If one of those coded modules is replaced, the car has to go to the dealer for their magic recoding.

In most cases nowadays, this is for at least somewhat legit reasons, e.g. antitheft. A powertrain ECU that won't fire up without seeing a matching-VIN control module where the antitheft system resides, provides at least some theoretical security deterrence, because a thief can't swap body control modules to get a stolen car started without the transponder in the key that actually belongs to the car. A radio that won't power up without a VIN match means a stolen radio is a paperweight. An instrument cluster that won't work without a VIN match provides at least some deterrence against swapping instrument clusters to cheat used-car odometer readings.

Yes, hackers find ways around these things, but it's another layer of deterrence against casual theft and cheating.

Well, (*cough*) unless you have those magic dealer level tools at home. ;)
Some of them havent been cracked. You can do a lot with available confuser pokers, but some things require an active connection to the mothership to do. Afaik, changing ecu vin is one of those things for some manufacturers. It is hard to crack as it isnt easy to capture the communication to try to decode it. Also pretty low profit in it as not that many people want it done and you are severely price capped as you have to significantly undercut the dealers.

For about $10,000 plus subscription costs you can get pretty close but are still missing the authentication from the mothership.

GM will sell you a 3 day subscription to the mothership connection for $75 USD if you have the hardware and software.

I have the hardware and software.

Long story short, I had some changes I wanted to make to both of our Volts when we owned 2. For what any local dealers wanted to make these adjustments to both cars...I bought the setup to do it myself for a bit less in the end and now I own the hardware.

If their cars are built like their other electric junk I've experienced, the first time you hit a curb with it the bumpers and roof will fly off, the door handles will stop working, and I expect half the interior electronics to stop working within a few years.

Oh, wait, this sounds strangely familiar for some reason. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Anyone selling something two years out based on a rendering is vaporware until proven otherwise. Has daymak ever sold anything that had to comply with CMVSS?

Edit:

I have to add that they cant even make a good rendering. What the hell is that? Somewhere between ps2 and ps3 full motion graphics for a single static promotional image.

Exactly what I was thinking.

There's tons of cheap cars and EV's out there from all sorts of places, some of them being sold for under the equivalent of $5K USD, but none of them come even close to meeting our safety standards, which is why you never see them over here.

Good news.... Hopefully there's more on the horizon for Oshawa. I go into the various plants every now and then - even the mothballed plants still have some storage going on and such. There's a whole lot of production capable space sitting there collecting dust.

The truck plant having come back from the dead was a sign GM hasn't completely flushed Canada down the toilet. Now this Ingersol announcement means we're actively on the radar again.
