Hi there, brand new to the forum. So far I find the info invaluable.

I purchased a 2010 GSX-R600 and honestly didn't realize how big of a problem theft is in condo garages. So I am installing an audible alarm for the bike. The immobilizer will be in early next week. I wish I could chain it except there is nothing in my parking spot where I can chain it too. So based on all of your experience, will installing the alarm with motion sensor and immobilizer be enough?

I guess I was naiive enough to think that if a thief didn't have a key they wouldn't be able to take it.

Looking forward to all of you advice.

Its not enough Romina, even with all that and chained to a pillar it would be gone under 1 minute. My buddy's bike got stole and it was caught on camera, 3 guys in a white minivan got out with one carrying a quick-cut saw and his partner pulled down a ramp and they took a chained motorcycle in 27 seconds.

uughh...the thought is making my stomach turn.

So what is the best deterrent?

A rocking chair, and a shotgun.
LolNot many options, that will really make you sleep well at night, a few things are usually suggestedBuy a old van (astrovan or something) and park it in the back of the van, black out the windows, make sure its not easily seen, or that the van will even startRent a storage unit near by, park it in a unit while not in use.Park in a friend/family garage.Any other method is risky, having a brandnew gsxr in a condo is a recipie for disaster

Make your bike unwanted by other people. Unfortunately the only way to do that to an SS is to make is super ugly to a point where they don't even recognize what model it is, or to have a couple lowsides and tip-overs, but then that hurts your bike.
No matter what alarm, gps, chain you can get, there's always a way for someone to take your bike if they really want it.

Luckily I have a garage of my own, but it's still entirely possible for someone to break in and take it.
Theft insurance is really your only safeguard, although I read that if your bike always gets stolen, your insurance can hike up and ultimately refuse to insure you. Not 100% if that's true or not, may also depend on each company. Call your agent and ask him/her.

How do they normally get around the alarm? Or do they just do it fast so nobody pays attention to an alarm going off for 20 seconds?

Disc locks may help against a single thief but not three big guys. You could squeeze it in front of your car if that's possible and install a perimeter alarm? park so close so its impossible to get the bike out. Then install spikes on your handlebars!

If you have a wall at the end of your space you could park the bike lengthwise at the back then back your car into the spot and get as close as you can to the bike. That would make it very hard for a thief. Also make sure to buy a cover and cover it up completely. There is an alarm made by scorpian that has a gps device that you install in the bike and then can track from your computer or iphone. Another option is LoJack which is a satellite tracking device that you hide in the bike somewhere (better than the scorpion but more expensive). Then when stolen it can easily be recovered if you act fast enough.

The main thing is to be out of sight and out of mind. Have an alarm on the bike, lock it down if you can and then cover it up.

Here's a good article to give you some tips http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/tech/anti_theft_strategies/index.html

Since someone mentioned cover- I just thought of this.

If every bike owner in every condo put a cover on their bike- I bet it would make things much more difficult for thieves.

ps. my bike was stolen off the street last year in broad day light.

Don't park it in the garage. my 2010 gsxr lasted a month in my condo garage and was stolen 3 days ago.

I've been dealing with the police the past couple days, and they say that that theft is up again after that big bust a couple months ago.

My advice, put it anywhere but your spot. rent a storage unit, park it at a family/friends house, anywhere but there.

As for me, i'm done riding till i'm in a house with a garage.

No need to STOP riding entirely. Just might not be a good time for that shiny, brand new SS. There are many bikes you could be riding that aren't as appealing to thieves but are still fun rides. Older gen SS's maybe? Naked bikes? I bet it's the shiny plastics that attract them like fat kids on cupcakes.

to OP: Tie the leash of your 200lb Rottweiler named "Killer" to the rear swing arm. Problem. Solved. (remember to untie him when you go for a ride....)

It won't be enough.

Trust me - check the posts here on how many bikes are taken from condos. Alarms, chains, gps trackers etc work t stop them going.

After reviewing the amount of thefts I've decided to rent a storage unit. Does anyone have any experience with storage units?

Check your local area for storage places. However make sure your allowed to store the bike inside it, as some don't allow flammable things (i.e. gas, propane, etc.) to be stored inside them.

Theft insurance!!!
If your work is close to your place come and check your bike around lunch time. Mine was stolen just before 1PM. They figured at lunch time condo parking has the lowest traffic. If you want to chain it, get anti bolt cutter chain just to buy more time. My bike was covered all the time and I had Scorpio alarm on it. The camera showed it took them 4 min from stop to take off.
No more bike for me until I move to my own house and set up my own security.
