Another new toy: Freya J-em guitar

Very VERY happy with my clone guitar, bought from Freya (a mom/pop shop in Ireland), the owner is a luthier and hand picks/assembles and sets up guitars.

I wanted an Ibanez JEM but couldn't justify the cost. I bought this expecting to have to do a lot of the work to make it playable myself. I was hugely surprised when I played it right out of the shipping packaging!

I'm most impressed with the playability and tone. I fully expected to swap out the pups but I'm thinking that money may now be spent elsewhere.

Well, aren't we exclusive for someone who posts about Xbox and shootings in the romper room. ;)

Get your motor running....

I posted in the for sale section and commented on a thread already created about a social topic.
Motor will be running after I buy a motorcycle

Impressive. lots of notes, but sounds lifeless.

gimmie something with soul.

Lifeless sound could be because of crappy recorded sound, or because of the way his amp sounds, or of course because of the guitar itself.

What? No comments? Not even a snarky post about guitar wankers? sigh.

Not enough use of the wanking bar ;). I love my rg. I got a mahogany neck thru rh with emg pickups that u run at 18 volts and I love it. How much did the jem clone cost?

no, it was just the style he was playing always sounds lifeless, doesnt matter who plays it, and what equipment they use
i know that players like yngwie are obviously great players, but the style of shredding is lifeless.

its funny how you can have 2 players, play the same guitar, and same notes, but one sounds better.

an example for you.

go on youtube, check out 4 versions of Little Wing

1. Hendrix
2. SRV
3. Skid Row
4. Steve vai

they are all playing the same thing, ( vai is even playing Hendrix`s guitar ) yet one sounds way better than the rest.
even though hendrix wrote it, SRV plays it much better.

I'm a Les Paul guy myself, but I'm glad you're happy with your new guitar. It's a touchy thing, bonding with a new instrument. Now, I suggest you investigate something called "phrasing." There's a musical magic in pausing during your playing. That was just a mess of notes.

Go YouTube "Joe Bonamassa at Royal Albert Hall." You'll see what I mean.

lol, thanks for the advise on phrasing, yes it was "just a mess of notes", I originally posted it (quickly) to refute a bad review of this guitar by a bunch of haters.

Bunmanchi, I prefer Hendrix's version better, less 'sanitised'.

As for the 'lifeless' comment, too each his own form of life, some prefer Harleys to Hayabusa, I lean toward the edgy side of 'feel', I'd pick Vai in Holland over Bonamasa at teh Royal Albert although I appreciate both.

peace, thanks for the feedback.

I keep looking through this thread at work, and can't see any of the videos! I need to look at this thread when I'm at home!

I had a guitar "bonding" moment the day before yesterday. I got home, pulled my old (circa 1985) Takamine EN10 off the wall and beat on it for about a half-hour, when I suddenly thought "ick, I own a Martin, what am I doing playing this crap for?". My EN10 is a perfectly fine instrument, but compared to the D-28, not so much...

... I suddenly thought "ick, I own a Martin, what am I doing playing this crap for?"...

No you're bragging. ;)

As much as I'd love a Martin, or a real JEM for that matter, I just can't justify the expense, maybe one day when I'm good enough that the paying gigs actually pay more than the outlay for the PA and the bar tab. ;)

Some more "soul" for the merry-go-rounders ;)

Finally watched the available videos. Is the Jem a 7 string, and if so, what's the low string, B?

Who's bragging? I count three guitars in your vid's, I only have two! <Grin>

The Martin was a special sentimental gift to myself (friends passing), and after a year of ownership I wish I'd bought it 25 years ago.

I pieced together a little PA system made of Behringer equipment for just a few bucks. I started with an 8 channel USB mixing board for home recording, and a year later added a pair of powered speakers. It's great for small gigs, and was well under $600 buying on-line.

Cool,

No, she's a 6 string, standard tuning. I do have a Douglas (another low cost guitar) 7 string, again standard tuning with the 'extra' string tuned to B. I've tried other tunings but my theory knowledge is best with standard. ;) I do keep a Les Paul tuned to DADGAD for playing zeppelin etc. and my dobros are generally open D, E, C or G (Fearless, posted above is open G).

It would be fun to see a bunch of bikes show up to an open mike with guitars slung. ;)

Ha! That would be fun. I'd throw my Takamine into a gig bag for over-the-shoulder transport, but not the D28!

Yeah, don't blame you on that one. If I had a D28, I'd keep it under lock and key and awy from uv and humidity and temperature changes and... ;)
