Another new ADV

They even brought back a 21 In front wheel . I believe the older Honda's XL series of dirt bikes was the last time they were used.

wasnt able to read the whole article(paywall), but it sounds like renaming but no actual changes to make it more offroad worthy?
They mention a 21" wheel, but only when referring to the 850gs?

The article referred to the F850GS having 21" wheels. The XR is the ADV-styled street bike with 17" wheels.

the F 900 XR shares nearly no parts with its F 850 GS stablemate. The GS trudges through the trail on a 21-inch front wheel; the XR carves corners on 17-inch hoops.

Lots of manufacturers have put 21" fronts on their ADV bikes, most of the KTMs, Tenere 700 has it, the F800GS/850GS, Tuareg 660, as well as a host of dual-sports and enduros: All the KTMs, CRFs, KLXs, WRs, etc.

Thoughts?

I’ve heard it’s a good bike. If someone isn’t looking for big boy power or the size of the s1kxr then I would say it’s worth considering for sure. Fairly certain all the tech carries over; cruise, heated grips, tft display, etc. maybe not the suspension..

What about this vs tenere!?

Good to know as there aren't a lot of manufactures making them at any reasonable cost. FortNine has them at a decent price however.

That tenere 700? Seems to me that’s way more dirt oriented. Way less tech.

I browsed the link but it seems like they largely put a 21” wheel on a street bike?

If you want a middleweight dirt/street bike and you want the tech maybe the baby GS is worth the look. If you don’t want the frills the Tenere should be fine. That cp2 motor is great.

How is this bike substantially different than a Yamaha MT9, Tracer 9 or Tracer 9 GT?

Pretty sure you're mixing up the 21" (which is quite standard) with a 20" oddball rim on your early 80's Honda project.

The yamaha triple is famous for being amazing, being a yamaha its also priced well and good value for money.
The older models will be fairly basic but the newer ones have all the tech the bmw will have.

Half the forum has at present or in the past owned an mt09 or a tracer of some kind, and with good reason

It’s just F900R but uglier. Essentially the same bike In the lower half.

My wife got one of these earlier this year. It’s a great bike! Obviously some similarities to the Tracer, but nicer dash, can be factory lowered, slightly lighter, etc. Better warranty as well (which you pay for, obviously). Price isn’t that far off, depending on options.
