Wow. It looks like the tough part is being the ballast.
 
Interesting. I would think that they would benefit from much steeper gearing but they all seem to be using something similar (and tall).

Why don't they just use a zero turn lawn mower and let the front wheels caster?

Because it's 4 wheeled trials.Knobbies are not allowed in 2 wheeled trials either. We use trials tires which are a sort of dual sport tire with a very soft carcass and rubber.
 
Michelin 1 ply radial soft compound rear (y) if you can get them.
