Ambalamps charges

There should not be any ambulance charge. No one should be put in position of second guessing in calling an ambulance because of financially difficulties. $50 a ride could be easily absorbed by the region or province.

There are a few exemptions. Odsp is one. EI is not. I am ok with some user pay built into healthcare as long as there are some safeguards to protect those that truly cant pay. I have no problem with paying $50 to lay down instead of climbing in and out of a car with a broken leg.

FWIW, the bill came in the mail a week later. For all I know, it may just disappear if you dont pay it.

Too many have figured out the ambulance helps you get faster service, since that ambulance and two paramedics are out of service until the patient is transferred to hospital care.
It’s really self serving if you don’t ‘need’ the ambulance. The token fee is peanuts compared to what that service costs . They show up at Oakville because grandma is having trouble breathing and her kids are too hammered to drive . Seriously .

I think I’d rather have an ambulance take grandma than putting drunks on the road in a panic.

Each time a family member took a ride we had to pay. Followed my mom once and had to pay once I got to the hospital as she was on the stretcher waiting in the ER.

Yeah IDK. I get the idea of maybe trying to discourage frivolous calls but there's been times in my life where that $50 would have been dear. Is there any leeway for that on compassionate grounds?

IIRC, in the past, if you were in your county/region, ambulance was free, if you were outside of where your address was, you were on the hook for $75. Things are a little different now. Apparently, every ambulance ride costs $240 and ohip picks up $195 if they deem your trip medically necessary. You pay $45. Small price to pay if you need it but I don't know when that changed. I don't know if attendance by fire has changed too.
A half a dozen tears ago a local ride cost me $45 but my wife's benefit plan took care of it. Out of province it's on you or CAA travel. A medivac is thousands. A friend in Caledon said his tab was far higher.

At the hospital the crew can't leave until you're checked in so you skip some of the triage and some preliminaries have been dealt with. Anti vaxxers take note as you plug the doors.

Triage for a walk-in is a joke. Take a number???? The guy with the sprained ankle is ahead of the chest pain guy???

I walked in once with a kidney stone and the "Triage"B**** said she was going on break after the guy in front of me. A thousand Kudos for the guy letting me go first.

A personal triage is necessary. IMO you don't call 911 for a sprained wrist but trying to drive while attending to or being distracted by a loved one could make work for a bunch of ambulances.

Fire got to me before the ambulance and it is common for an ambulance dispatch to call in fire as well. I didn't get a bill from fire but that can happen.

IIRC someone had a bike mishap and a bystander called 911. It was just a bit of scratched chrome but a bill was sent by fire because the rider was from out of town.

I once triggered a smoke detector on a high rise and fire came automatically. It could have been a $1000 charge but everyone agreed that what I was doing shouldn't have triggered the device and the bill was waived. The fire captain has the discretion to charge, even if a neighbour calls because they thought your BBQ was a house fire.

I would hope that the minimal charge would get waived if the person was in dire financial straits.

I'd gladly pay $50 for an ambulance ride. I've read wayyyyy toooo many horror stories from the US about people being charged $50,000 for stitches and aspirin after a hospital visit.
Acquaintance of my crashed on our Tail of the Dragon trip. Told us he had a few medical issues but not how bad. Fell asleep on the Cherohala Skyway. Helicopter and a couple hour stay with MRI’s came to $56K US.

Ambulance ride is squat compared to the cost of parking at a hospital.

The guy in charge of parking at Pearson looking on in envy at the guy in charge of parking at virtually any hospital.

Trillium is fairly affordable. $25/24h or so.

When I went in I didn’t think I’d be staying so my wife came to grab the car the next day and it was $17 or so.
