Amazon Echo Dot

I don't know why anyone would surrender their privacy to this degree. It's bad enough that we can't surf the web without our every move being tracked. Now we got these things spying on us, that are probably listening for keywords and triggers to know what to market to us, how often we have sex and the sounds we make doing so and who knows what in the future.

F-that. None of these 1984-esque Telescreens will make it into my house.

If you have a smart phone you’ve already submitted to it. They also listen 100% of the time

I was talking to someone and they said one of their friends was selling their cottage with a pond near huntsville for $800. The next day a facebook ad for the cottage popped up. I never actively searched for it, obviously the phone was listening.

Lots and lots of other ways you can get attached like that - GPS coordinates are one that most people overlook. Lots of apps track your location constantly, and when they see you're in the same vicinity as a friend for a period of time the dots are connected. Next thing you know you see things that they were searching for in ads you're being served.

Are there apps that listen and serve apps based on what it hears? Yep...but it's that's an Android thing. If you value privacy, and to avoid garbage like that which isn't as uncommon as many would like to believe, buy an iPhone.

That said, the "everything is listening to you" thing is vastly overhyped when you take time to investigate the realities, and understand all the other ways you are being marketed to via things like the aforementioned GPS/friends lists/who you interacted with last on Facebook/etc etc etc etc etc ad infinitum.

My phone is off most of the time. I use it almost entirely as a ... phone.

The point is that this is another intrusion that people welcome into their homes and for what?

I get the impression that most people buying these things are of a younger generation who had "devices" in their cribs and thus have never known true privacy and anonymity. They think it's natural to stare into the deathly glow of the cell phone and to have the ever-listening ear of Amazon or Apple of Google there all the time.

Whenever that happens I just report the ads as “sexually inappropriate”.

I use mine almost exclusively as an egg timer. I got a free google home with my Spotify account but have yet to set it up. I’m not forking over a ton of cash for smart switches/lamps when I can just flip them with my finger. Wasn’t too impressed with the amazon sound quality, will see what the google version is like.
The Google mini has a very "tinny" sound.
Was much more impressed by the sound of the full size Google Home

The original Amazon echo dot is the same, but the second generation dot (with the fabric ring on the outside) is vastly improved, even for a dot. It's still not as good as the bigger ones of course, but it's still WAY better vs the first gen units. I have 2 first gens and 1 of the second gen (fabric) models and the difference is huge.

My first echo was the original dot and I quickly returned it. Sound was horrible, though that was to be expected from such a small device. I was going to plug into an external speaker but it did not work exactly as I had hoped.

I did pick up the new echo dot around Christmas and like you said it is a HUGE improvement. I plan on picking up a few more when they are on sale to add to a few rooms I do not have anything in.

I use the old dots in places where sound quality doesn't matter much as we are just using it for things like our home automation, or having it read the newsflash or weather.

I placed the second gen dot with the better sound in our living room where we do use it for music on occasion.

I use mine primarily for music and turning on and off the lights. I really like the stereo setup with the new echo plus and the echo sub. I am no audiophile but it is a very clean sound, no distortion at any volume.

true story. I was having a conversation with a few others and the subject of farting came up. Next day, on my google news feed there were two articles about farting.

Coincidence? I Think Not.

Try saying blackbriar or treadstone. All the cool tactical guys will bust in on ya.

Was sitting in the living room having a beer with a friend. Said I was wondering if Alexa was spying on me. He laughed. I laughed. Alexa laughed.
